gnome/GDM problems with MDK 2006 upgrade

Hello everyone, I'm trying to upgrade from MDK LE 2005 to the 2006 version.

The problem that I'm having is that when I try to login to my usual gnome

desktop, I just loop back to the login screen after a few seconds. The only

way that I can login to a GUI is to switch to a terminal, login as root,

run gdm-stop, and then kde.

Once I'm into kde, not everything is working. For instance if I try to run evolution, gaim, or

liferea then I get the error message:

evolution: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_mapped_file_new

Any ideas how to fix gnome ? Thanks!

Rename a file called .gnome in your user's home directory. Note: it is a hidden file. Then, launch gnome again, allowing it to form new preferences. I this is successful, something in your old preferences is clashing. If this is not successful, the problem is more serious. Make sure your updates were all successful.

Hi Guys, thanks for your feedback so far. I've tried your suggestions

and I'm still faced with the same problem.

I've had problems with GNOME in the past, probably stemming from my

attempts to try to upgrade it.The last workaround that worked was to make

a symbolic link from the file

/usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0.600.3

to

/usr/local/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0

but now libgobject-2.0.so.0.600.3 is gone and replaced with libgobject-2.0.so.0.800.1

(presumably the latest version?).

Another thing: when I run drakconf, I first receive the warning

*** This build of Glib was compiled with glib 2.6.5, but is currently running with 2.6.0, which is too old. We'll continue, but expect problems!

Does this help you figure out what's gone wrong with my distro?

Thanks again !

When you did the upgrade, how did you do it? Was it from CD/DVD? Or from the urpmi mirrors?

One thing worth trying if you have done it from CD/DVD or from URPMI is to try this.

1. Add your easyurpmi sources for main, contrib, jpackage, updates, plf-free and plf-nonfree using the easyurpmi link at the top of this page. Use compressed index for speed.

2. Once added, from the terminal prompt type the following:

su (supply root password when prompted)
urpmi --auto-select --auto)

This will then update all components that may not have been upgraded the first time round. If you have a slow internet connection, I'd advise against doing this as it will take ages!

Hope that helps!

Okay, I followed your instructions. After running urpmi I got the messages back:

Some package requested cannot be installed:

locales-kn-2.3.4-2mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied locales[== 2.3.4-2mdk])

subversion-devel-1.2.3-3mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied devel(libaprutil-0))

tikiwiki-1.9.1-1mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied pear(phpcas/CAS.php))

The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded:

FlashPlayer-7.0-2mdk.i586 (due to conflicts with gplflash-0.4.13-1mdk.i586)

libgdl-1_0-0.4.0-1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied gdl == 0.4.0-1mdk)

libicu28-devel-2.8.d01-3mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied icu == 2.8.d01-3mdk)

libldap2-devel-2.1.30-6mdk.i586 (due to conflicts with libldap2.3_0-devel-2.3.6-1mdk.i586)

libsubversion1_0-static-devel-1.1.3-11mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied libsvn_client1_0 == 1.1.3-11mdk)

postfix-2.2.5-7mdk.i586 (due to conflicts with sendmail-8.13.4-6mdk.i586)

scaffold-0.1.0-3mdk.i586 (due to missing libgdl-1.so.0)

medium "The Ultimate Linux Desktop DVD (cdrom3)" is not selected

Then I tried running gdm but still the same problems with the loop back to the login

page.

If you run that command again, does it bring back this same list?

If so, try a urpmi.updatemedia -a or it could be urpmi.update -a to make sure all the sources are up-to-date.

Do you have a 3rd DVD, as it looked like it's not selected, or it couldn't find it. You can always remove this media item from the Software Media Manager if you don't have the 3rd disk.

This time the "urpmi --auto-select --auto" did work and a whole lot of rpms got installed, but

still I'm finding the same GNOME related problems.

There was a recurring warning message duing the rpm installation:

/sbin/ldconfig: /usr/local/lib/libgthread-2.0.so.0 is not a symbolic link

/sbin/ldconfig: file /usr/lib/libgnomeui-2.so.0.600.1;419cb9c9 is truncated

/sbin/ldconfig: /usr/lib/libgm.so.0 is not a symbolic link

Is this pointing to a broken gnome installation?
