Can't get Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG working with

I haven't been able to get Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG card working with Mandriva Limited Edition 2005, and am desperately asking for help.

I've know very little about Linux, except that it's better than Windows. So I decided to try Mandriva Limited Edition 2005. Here are the details of the brand new laptop I've installed it on: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1117177721941

 

I download it and install it successfully, partitioning 20 of my 50 GB for it; the other 30 are for Windows. The first time I ran it I had some trouble; it only gave me this weird command prompt; I'm guessing because the video drivers weren't set up correctly. I tried "reinstalling it" -- "You are currently using X, would you like to upgrade to X?" ... yes -- and managed to do something (choose a display setting, perhaps?) so now it works.

 

Well, everything works, except the Internet. My Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection won't work, and I've spent a few days trying to get it to work.

 

I spent some time investing ndiswrapper before I realized (or came to the conclusion) that ndiswrapper is already installed with this dist... I then read a bit and went to http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/firmware.php and http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/firmware.php ... don't know what to do, there, either.

 

I then go to http://support.intel.com/support/notebook/sb/cs-006408.htm and downloaded the driver but couldn't figure out what to do with it (said to install it by hand?? even if I'm correct in guessing they mean with the terminal thing, I don't know how to do that.)

 

It seems to have already detected the card and has installed the driver, too. When I go to "manually install a driver" it already has the driver listed, but whether I say Autoprobe or Manually specify options, it flashes something quickly and goes back to the beginning; another had this problem (posted on another forum), and I'm going to find the link for that thread, too. Someone said it had to do with the firmware of the driver, which is how I wound up at http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/firmware.php ...

 

That's one reason why I'm considering upgrading to Mandriva Linux 2006 Beta 3; maybe it's fixed the problem. I wonder though, is a good idea, if will fix the problem, or am I better off with what I have now (as that IS a beta... but I've heard Mandriva makes sure everything's stable?)

Basically there are 2 ways of getting wireless to work on linux: with ndiswrapper and a windows driver or with a native linux driver. In your case there is no need to use ndiswrapper since there is a native linux driver for your card.

 

The sourceforge page is were you find the sourcecode of the driver (and all sorts of informations ofcourse :) ) but you don't need that. Mandriva comes with the driver precompiled. Just use the driver that comes with Mandriva.

 

After this your problem: Open the MCC, internet connection, and setup a new connection. Use the mandriva defaults or if you want to select the driver (called module in Linux) by hand make sure you pick the ipw2200 one.

 

If that doesn't work install the driver by hand: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=14972 (it's for setting up with ndiswrapper but not really important. Just follow the instructions from modprobe ndiswrapper (in your case: modprobe ipw2200). If you get errors post them here.

Ugh. Why is it Mandriva can see the Windows partitions but Home XP can't see the Mandriva partition?

 

I tried saving a file on C & D and whereas before it would let me (I think), this time it wouldn't. What?? KWrite kept saying something like 'make sure you have access' and something, and OpenOffice Word said something like 'this does not exist.' Ugh.

 

I documented it all out on a text file on my Mandriva desktop, and if someone can tell me how to access my Linux files, I'll put it here and you can see exactly what happens. Basically, whether I choose 'Autoprobe' the "extra options" for the ipw2200 driver or if I choose to 'Specify options' and leave them blank (or put '0' for channel, the only one I know), something flashes quickly and I'm back at the beginning, "Manually load a driver" or whatever.

Because Mandriva comes with a driver ro read/write fat partitions and MS doesn't have a driver to read ext3 partitions. You have to install the driver first: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd
