Hi,

I was planning to buy a pc with following specs, and I was wondering if anyone knows whether the hardware is supported. I tried the harware compatibility list on Mandrake web-site, but could not check the motherboard and ddr ram for PC 3200 (400). I would appreciate any feed back.

CPU: NEW AMD XP-2000+ [1.67 GHZ QuantiSpeed] 266FSB PROCESSOR

HDD: 80GB 7200 RPM ATA 100 HARD DRIVE

MEMORY: 256MB PC3200 DDR PC400 MEMORY

MODEM: PCI 56K V.90 FAX MODEM W/ VOICE

MOTHERBOARD: MSI KT4-VL VIA KT400 PC400 MB W/ 8X AGP & USB 2.0

NETWORK: NONE OR BUILD IN 10/100 NETWORK ON SPECIFIED MAIN BOARD

SOUND: AC97 3D Wave SOUND

VIDEO: New Nvidia Geforce-4 8X AGP VERSION MX440 64MB DDR W/ TV OUT

Thanks,

The only problem I can see from your specs is modem and sound. I am not sure what chipset is used for built in sound (realtek ALC 650 AC97 compatible? not sure what module is used for this even if supported). And I have a feeling that your modem is going to be one of those winmodems which could be iffy in terms of linux support without knowing what chipset it uses.

But otherwise, your computer should be ok for linux.

Thanks a lot DragonMage!!

I have an external hardware modem - so internal winmodem I can live with... and I guess I can add a sound card anytime if I run into trouble with this one. I am glad to know that rest of the sytem should be fine :).

Thanks again for the info,
