this pm just reached my inbox, but i think it is better to post it in this forum, so everyone can help. i am busy with setting up my new computers atm, so will have to take a closer look later, when i have some time. :unsure:

actually i've just sifted to mandrake linux 10.1,earlier using windows xp.i've problem in connecting to the net.

although i'm able to ping my default gateway and ip address and an interconnection appelat showing ethernet has connection but couldn't able to connect my ip.network monitor also shows that ethernet device not connected and when i click the connect button the network monitor window hangs.

i'm giving u details abt network and hardware

network card Dlink DFE538 tx 10/100 mbps fast ethernet

PII 333 mhz with 128 mb sdram

IP address 10.250.222.123

Netmask 250.250.250.0

default gateway 10.250.222.1

Preferred DNS 202.114.50.4

Alternate DNS 202.144.115.4

i'm connecting to internet through lan.my service provider is SIFY in India.its a broadband service.

now whenever i tried to connect to internet through software provided by my isp, after providing username and password

console gives the output Login failed:Invalid session pleae relaunch your dialer.

but in winxp i'm able to connect by providing this username & password.

please help me as i really got frustrated....i'm trying to fix it from last three days by searching net.but couldn't able to solve it.

i hope for a quick response which will help in resolving my problem

thanks in advance

when your system is up and running, open a terminal and log in as root (type "su", followed by password). now type "ifup eth0" and after that "ifconfig eth0" and post the output, so we can see if the connection is really there or if there are problems related to the dlink card.

check if you have a firewall running. if yes, disable it for now.

you might also want to take a look at this howto

http://www.iwpcs.co.uk/simple_net_setup.html

also: it would be helpful if you can describe what you did until now exactly (have you used the wizards? if yes, which options did you choose, etc.)

good luck.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I also checked firewall setting where everything was allowed.

i also went to ur suggested page and changes some fields according to that.

Edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 - This is the main config file for the interface.

It should read :

DEVICE=eth0

BOOTPROTO=static

IPADDR=10.250.222.123

NETMASK=255.255.255.0

NETWORK=10.250.222.0

BROADCAST=10.250.222.255

ONBOOT=yes

MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=NO ###this is my above files content####

/etc/resolv.conf should contain the nameserver address(es) - put the address of your ISPs nameserver right at the top. eg:

nameserver 195.20.224.165

HOSTNAME=10.250.222.123.sify.net

NETWORKING=yes

GATEWAY=10.250.222.1

GATEWAYDEV=eth0 ####this line was not present in above file###

but after changing also problem remains same as my login to my internet service provider

fails.but yes by ifup etho and ifdown etho i can swith off and on my ethernet

i think this may help u to reach a conclusion where my problem is.

i must admit: i have no real idea why you cannot connect unless you made a typo when entering your data or if your isp is not so linux friendly (like e.g. aol). from what i see in your config files, everything looks okay.

maybe someone else has an idea... :unsure:

sorry.

edit: one idea! try with editing the M II not supported from NO to YES

Well, according to ping results, you are connected - you can ping your router, can'[t you? So what is exactly a problem? On my 10.1 box, mandrake control center for some reason always shows "Testin connection.... Failed..... Not connected", but I can browse the web just fine. If you connect via a router, you can enable packet filtering on the router, then safely stop firewall on you PC and try browsing the web. See if that helps.

Getting there... You're saying you could connect from XP with no problems... How do you connect to the ISP? Router. ADSL modem? Do you have other PCs connected via the same device which you could try to see if the connection is being maintained while your linux box can't connect? What software do you use to dial in?

Well deserved praise arctic.

Welcome to MUB, alokcool. Thank you for also letting us know you solved the problem and how you did it. Unfortunately too many forget.

I suspect that when, as you, say you were using 10.1 Official that it was setting the connection as adsl as default whereas 2005-LE I think has LAN as default in Mandrake Control Centre (MCC as we refer to it). It makes the world of difference.

Cheers and happy Mandriving. John.
