payasam
BVC: Looks like I'll have to do an FDISK /MBR and go on from there. As it happens, the possibility of the processor's over-heating had occurred to me too. Evidence: repeated resets did no good, but leaving the machine switched off for 30 or 40 minutes breathed new life into it. Trouble is, the symptoms match just about every ailment that exists, including dandruff and baldness in infancy. You seriously think Mandriva is a mass poisoner? bvc
 who me? nah! Was it 10.0 that fried hardware (a cdrom)? ...and windows installs? B4 that, diskdrake that caused me to do numerous reinstalls. No, I don't dout it, but for this sorta thing it's very unlikely. It's too random. I'm stll running the same le2005 and another win98se install and it has been fine. Still, can't help but wonder. Now, I never use a linux util to mess with the partition table or mbr. Ever! I haven't any problems since, except the 2 above mentioned incidents, that didn't involve interactively using a linux util. But then, I no longer allow mandriva to mount the win partitions either. pmpatrick
Try disconnecting the hard drive and running memtest. If it still freaks, you'll know it has nothing to do with anything on your hard drive. And while your in there, clean out the dust bunnies, check your cpu fan, make sure everything is properly seated, ect.
payasam
Strange, BVC, but I've always (in theory, anyway) thought Linux to be more flexible in dealing with Windows than the other way around. I did my original partitions from Win, of course, leaving MDK to handle its own. What is the cholesterol content of a fried CD-ROM? Will do, PMPatrick. Except there's a bloody great power supply dangling from the ceiling which doesn't let me reach anything. And man, these dust bunnies reproduce far more prolifically than the long-eared kind.
