Installed security updates - now can't print

I had Mandrake Update perform many of the security updates a few days ago (~ 24 Jan). The updates included those for the printing system.

After updating I had lost the ability to print in Mandrake 9.0 Powerpack.

My printer is an old Hp Laserjet 6L parallel port which still works well on the windoze side of the dual boot.

As per the suggestions outlined in the "View newest post can't print anymore" post on this Forum, I removed most of the updated printer packages, uninstalled the printer, then reinstalled from CD the old pronter packages. All to no avail.

Following is the list of packages I was concerned with:

Printer Security upgrades Removed to reenable printing

9.0/RPMS/cups-drivers-1.1-84.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/RPMS/foomatic-2.0.2-20021220.2.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/RPMS/ghostscript-module-X-7.05-33.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/RPMS/libijs0-0.34-24.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/RPMS/printer-filters-1.0-84.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/RPMS/printer-testpages-1.0-84.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/RPMS/printer-utils-1.0-84.2mdk.i586.rpm

Printer Security upgrades which were not uninstalled (too many dependancies):

9.0/RPMS/ghostscript-7.05-33.2mdk.i586.rpm

Printer Security upgrades (listed on Mandrake Secure) which could not be removed (not installed):

9.0/RPMS/gimpprint-4.2.5-0.2.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/RPMS/libgimpprint1-4.2.5-0.2.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/RPMS/libgimpprint1-devel-4.2.5-0.2.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/RPMS/libijs0-devel-0.34-24.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/RPMS/omni-0.7.1-11.2mdk.i586.rpm

9.0/SRPMS/printer-drivers-1.0-84.2mdk.src.rpm

Thanks for the ideas so far!

New tries are way better than reinstall distro.

I typed in the services command and got command not found.

Three cupsd processes were listed on the KDE System Guard Process table.

I removed the following package with all the depends:

9.0/RPMS/ghostscript-7.05-33.2mdk.i586.rpm

Then reinstalled the original printing packages.

Good News! I can print again!

Thanks for helping guide me.

If you are using HP 710, 712,722, 820 or 1000. After applying the security patch, the new rpm will overwrite your pnm2ppa.conf file.

Solution:

- edit the /etc/pnm2ppa.conf file

- comment out the line with 'version 0'

- uncomment the entry for your default printer model
