Sound card not always working properly

Sometimes, when I boot my laptop, SE2005 fails to load my sound card, so the mixer icon has a large red "X" on top of it and claims there is no audio device. Sometimes if I reboot it will see it, other times it won't. It is an ATI card, I think the driver was snd-atiixp. Any idea what may be going on?

Thanks a lot :)

Sorry I ent got back sooner, it sometimes works for a few days then will just dive... Well I did the modprobe commands - no errors. And I have added me to the audio group. It seems the same when as root.

Also, sometimes, I'll log on, there won't be an X but the sound will still not work properly. If I change the engine in Amarok I can sometimes get some audio or I just reboot and hope for the best.

What could be causing this rather odd problem?
