Okay, dumb question; does kde 3.1 install over top of kde 3.0.5a or beside it? Specifically this is aimed at building it from source and then installing it onto Mandrake 9.0.

Once the Mandrake rpm's are out, do you think they will install overtop of 3.0.x or beside it?

Beside it meaning that you can use either version.

On Gentoo Linux, 3.1 install beside it at /usr/kde/3.1.

When kde 3 came out when we were all at MDK 8.2, it was possible to install the default kde (2.2.2 at the time) and 3.0 beside it. I'm sure it will be the same with MDK 9 when the rpm will be ready.

So how many loops do you need to jump through in order to get it to boot into 3.1 instead of 3.0.x?

I remember when I tried to install 3.0 onto Mandrake 8.2 I had quite a time trying to get the two to live side-by-side happily and to even boot into 3.0.
