Guest wxyfish
I am a new comer and I do not have lots of experience on Mandrake. I want to install Mandrake-10.1-official-i586 on a workstation(hp xw6200) with two Xeon CPUs (64bit). But I got a black screen after I clicked the <enter> key at the first step of install process. Can I install Mandrake10.1(32bit version) on xw6200? Thanks for your help.
ianw1974
It's not something I've tried, haven't got a 64 bit system yet. But, you'd probably be better off running the 64 bit version I would have thought for better performance!
Guest wxyfish
Thanks, ianw1974 Yes, u a right. 64 bit Mandrake is ok. But I think I really need a 32bit Mandrake10.1. It is same that my systemc does not work on 64bit MDK. Is there anyone who can help me to install a 32bit Mandrake10.1 on a workstation (hp xw6200) with two Xeon? Thanks! Phantom
Try this: press F1 at the first screen and type "linux vga=771", maybe it's simply a display problem.
Guest wxyfish
Thanks! But I think it is not a display problem. Maybe it is a CPU problem. I got this after I pressed F1 and type "text" init init/main.c:714 ----------------[ cut here]---------------- kernel BUG at arch/i386/kernel/apic.c: 358! invalid operand: 0000 [#1] Modules linked in: CPU: 0 ....... ...... I think Mandrake10.1-i586 does not like Xeon. By the way I can install FC3 on the workstation. It works well. I don't know which version of Mandrake10.1 I should install. DragonMage
Seems to be an APIC problem. When booting up from the CD, press F1, then type linux noapic Hopefully the installation continues

ianw1974
There are some others you can try as well: linux noapic nolapic linux acpi=off linux ide=nodma or a combination of all/some of them: linux noapic nolapic acpi=off ide=nodma linux noapic nolapic acpi=off I don't have a 64bit system, so am guessing this may help. I might get chance to have one soon, else if I had one now, I'd certainly try it to help let you know :P
Phantom
it's not 64bit related as I can install a 10.1 on mine. I think the i386 kernel is not liking the Xeon cpu, any chance you can download a Mandrake 2005 ?
Guest wxyfish
Thanks ianw1974. They do not work. I think the problem is about CPU.

ianw1974
Phantom, 2005 does not work. :( How do you mean 2005 doesn't work? Same as 10.1? Any further errors that are different between the two to help us diagnose the problem further?
Guest wxyfish
yes, ianw1974 almost same as 10.1 some information after type F1--->text EIP: 0060: [<c03c4cfc>] Not tainted VLI EFLAGS: 00010246 (2.6.11-6mdk-i586-up-1GB) EIP is at setup_local_APIC+0x2c/0x170 ..... .....
