aight, so I want to install blender, but, to do so I need glibc 2.3.1

well, trying to install the newer version of glibc, first attempt looks like this:

[root@riesling Downloads]# rpm -ivh glibc*

error: failed dependencies:

initscripts < 6.91-18mdk conflicts with glibc-2.3.1-6mdk

ok, let's try using urpmi and see if it picks up anything. well, it does, sort of.....

The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded:

3ddesktop-0.2.4-2tex

AlephOne-0.12.0-5mdk

Guppi-0.40.3-5mdk

ImageMagick-5.4.8.3-2mdk

Maelstrom-3.0.5-8mdk

NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191

NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.mdk90up

OpenOffice.org-1.0.1-9mdk

<snip-there are a LOT more, but you get the point>

do you agree ? (Y/n) n

yeah, i wasn't about to uninstall all that crap. and xfree86 is in there somewhere too. so, i think, why not try to upgrade it? nope...

[root@riesling Downloads]# rpm -Uvh glibc*

error: failed dependencies:

initscripts < 6.91-18mdk conflicts with glibc-2.3.1-6mdk

glibc = 2.2.5 is needed by locales-2.3.1.3-7mdk

glibc = 2.2.5 is needed by locales-2.3.1.3-7mdk

glibc = 2.2.5-16mdk is needed by glibc-devel-2.2.5-16mdk

so...i have no idea what to try next. i don't want to uninstall all that crap, i'm worried specifically about the initscripts dependency, afraid I'll break something. anyone have any ideas or know a way to get blender working?

thanks!

This v of blender needs

ld-linux.so.2

libc.so.6

[bvc@localhost bvc]$ urpmf ld-linux.so.2

glibc:/lib/ld-linux.so.2

[bvc@localhost bvc]$ urpmf libc.so.6

glibc:/lib/i686/libc.so.6

glibc:/lib/libc.so.6

glibc_lsb:/lib/lsb/libc.so.6

[bvc@localhost bvc]$ rpm -q glibc

glibc-2.2.5-16mdk

[bvc@localhost bvc]$

I didn't check any other deps.

i know :) i'm trying to find a way to get the version of libc.so.6 (apparently it wants glibc 2.3.x) installed, but the dependencies are very odd.

I just download the Linux binaries from www.blender.org and run them anywhere I like.

I got them last night, runs fine, now i just have to figure out the weird interface :)

Good luck with that. :D

Try Wings3D as well, you can look for more info at the Sticky thread I posted at 'Everything Linux' forum.
