Kieth
I am not able to play a music cd on my dvd. Is this related to the fact that rawdevices is not working? I also have a VCR attached to my computer. I can see the images, but there is no sound. Any ideas as to the problem? Thanks
devries
I doubt it has to do with the rawdevices service not being enabled. What application are you using to play the CD? Try changing the default device in it if you have a cdrom burner or dvd burner or something else attached. With vcr you mean you have a tv card in your pc? What card is that? Kieth
Yes, I have a video capture card, which is: Vendor: Philips Semiconductors Description: SAA7135HL Multi Media Capture Device It is recognised with Mandrake. In fact, I can see the images with XawTV. There just isn't any sound. For playing music CDs, I tried using various programs. At this moment, I am trying again with KsCD. It shows that it is playing, showing also the author and title of the song, but there just isn't any sound. Ok, now I am trying with Totem, and yes there is sound. B) :woops: I guess I didn't try it earlier. Any ideas, though, on getting KsCD, my VCR and XawTV working correctly? Thanks, Kieth
devries
For kscd: open kmix and make sure every channel is open (probably a line in is muted) For the tv card: look if all the modules (drivers) are loaded and with the right options. (i can't tell you waht options or what modules. Post for that the relevant output of lspci -v and lsmod)
Kieth
I have tried to work with kmix, still no sound from my music cd. I also downloaded lots, in the hopes of getting sound from my VCR. Still no luck. Here are the files you asked for. Hopefully they mean somethng to you, as they mean nothing to me. devries
From lsmod: saa7134 93232 0 from lspci -v: 00:09.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7133 Audio+video broadcast decoder (rev f0) Subsystem: Animation Technologies Inc.: Unknown device 0214 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 17 Memory at e6000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2 are the relevant parts: Lsmod shows you if the module is loaded (windows=installed, sort off). Lspci gives all kind of things to see that sometimes are interesting. However not in this case. Your card is perfectly supported and the module perfectly installed. My guess would then be something to do with the audio since you have also problems playing a cd. What is your setup? Do you use arts, esd? Do yo have other problems with sound? Kieth
I'm glad to hear that my card is installed supported and that the module is installed correctly. What is my sound setup? I don't know. Whatever Mandrake installed, I use! In the Mandrake Control Center (System - services), it shows alsa running. I haven't noticed other sound problems. The sound with games work OK. I have been recording from a cassette tape to the computer using Audacity, and I can hear it just fine. Kieth edit: I checked to see if I had everything downloaded, and here is the result. # urpmi kmix Everything already installed # urpmi alsa Everything already installed Edited April 26, 2005 by Kieth
Kieth
I noticed another defect. When I was using 10.0, while recording to Audacity, I could also hear it on my computer. Now, with 10.1 (on a new computer), I can't hear it while recording. After it is recorded, I can push play, and I hear it fine. Also, if I remember correctly, alsa wasn't working with 10.0. adamw
keith: run your volume control then unmute and raise the volume of your 'mic' channel.
Kieth
I had already checked the volumn control, but just to make sure, I did it again. No problems there. Notning muted, and volumns on max. If you can come with any more ideas, I would appreciate it. Kieth
adamw
is there a channel named 'capture'? Is that one unmuted and maxed?
Kieth
Yes, there is a channel named 'capture', and it is maxed. In fact, it will not even allow me to lower it's volumn. Another problem, which if it has nothing to do with my sound, I will have to start another thread. When I boot up, after checking the usb connections, it says it's going to check the root file system after the next mount. Then when I do re-boot, and it does check the root file system, it never finishes. That is, it stays right there. I wait and wait, then finally re-boot. Could there be a broken thread or something in the root file system that is causing the problem? I do not notice any other problems while running Mandrake. All my programs seem to work OK. Could the problem be resolved if I disable alsa and use another sound setup (esound?)? If so, how would I do it. I know I can disable alsa in MCC, but how would I get another sound setup working. Maybe I could just try it and see what happens. Thanks.
Steve Scrimpshire
For kscd, it expects a link /dev/cdrom As root ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom Assuming of course your cdrom/dvd is /dev/hdc. Or you could click Extras -> Configure kscd and select the proper /dev/ name
Kieth
# ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom ln: `/dev/cdrom': File exists
adamw
kieth: run 'draksound' as root, it'll give you a couple of possible drivers for your card. If you select the one that starts snd- , you're using ALSA. To stop using ALSA, pick the other driver (it'll probably have a similar name, just without snd- at the start).
