k6h
/etc/modprobe.preload # /etc/modprobe.preload: kernel modules to load at boot time. # # This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are # to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with # a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored. # this file is for module-init-tools (kernel 2.5 and above) ONLY # for old kernel use /etc/modules nvidia-agp 8250_pci 8250 epca esp isicom istallion moxa mxser stallion sx synclink synclinkmp nvidia (this module was added manually later after installing nvidia drivers) I don't know nothing about them, nevertheless I decided to comment out most of them to speed up boot process (and I succeeded) #8250_pci #8250 #epca #esp #isicom #istallion #moxa #mxser #stallion #sx #synclink #synclinkmp Does anyone know why they are there ? Qchem
You should look in /usr/src/linux/Documentation to find what the various modules do, e.g. a quick grep suggests that 8250 is for the serial port.
adamw
Yeah. As I understand it, they're modules for common hardware which cannot be autoprobed and which involve no risk if they're loaded on a system which doesn't contain that hardware.
