KDE Help Center produces hard-lock (solved)

I recently installed 10.1 with KDE 3.2. If I select More Applications/Documentation/KDE Help Center I get a hard-lock.

If I run khelpcenter from the CL I get the message: main template file name is empty.

If I run man from konqueror I get a hard-lock.

I am thinking that I didn't install some help related rpms during the installation. Can anyone direct me to the files I am missing?

I really doubt you forgot to install something. I get the template error, too, but khelpcenter goes on to run fine. I can't testify to the menu item, because i do not use KDE, but man runs completely fine for me from konqueror. I use kde-3.3 though.

Can you run konqueror from a console and then run man in it and see if there is an error aside from your ordinary kde/qt errors that one gets every time one launches a QT app?

You may also want to try the repair script that's pinned in Tips and Tricks. I happen to know the guy who cobbled it together and he's a great guy.

Thanks for the reply Steve. I ran your script (heh, I had not thought to do this before :o)

This is what I see in notonmirrors

libxorg-x11-6.7.0-4.2.101mdk
shadow-utils-4.0.3-8.1.101mdk
xorg-x11-server-6.7.0-4.2.101mdk
xorg-x11-75dpi-fonts-6.7.0-4.2.101mdk
kdebase-common-3.2.3-134.7.101mdk
xorg-x11-6.7.0-4.2.101mdk
glibc-devel-2.3.3-23.1.101mdk

This is what I see in missing_files.list

missing  c /root/.Xdefaults
missing  c /root/.bash_logout
missing  c /root/.bash_profile
missing  c /root/.bashrc
missing  c /root/.cshrc
missing  c /root/.tcshrc
missing  c /root/.vimrc
missing    /root/tmp
missing    /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1
missing    /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2
missing  c /etc/default/useradd
missing    /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a
missing    /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a
missing    /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/encodings.dir
missing    /usr/share/wallpapers/mandrake-linux
missing    /var/spool/at/spool
missing    /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/encodings.dir
missing    /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/encodings.dir
missing    /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/encodings.dir
missing    /boot/kernel.h-2.6.8

So kdebase-common-3.2.3-134.7.101mdk has missing files but isn't on the mirror I am using?

Did you instal KDE from source or from the Mandrake RPM...?

mandrake seriously mess up the KDE control centre to stop it duplicating the wizards ?

however if its from RPM you can try

urpme kcontrol and

urpmi kcontrol and see if it fixes it?

also try updating your urpmi sources ...

Gowator:

I ran urpme kcontrol and urpmi kcontrol after booting in failsafe mode. It seems to have fixed "Configue Your Desktop"(kcontrol). Thanks.

I still have my other problem: if I select More Applications/Documentation/KDE Help Center I get a hard-lock.

Just an update.

It turns out my problem was with the new 7167 NvVIDIA driver. After reinstalling MDK 10.1, I experienced no problems until 7167 was reinstalled. With 7167 installed, my khelpcenter problems returned immediately.

After patching 7167 (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=47405) my problems seem to have disapperaed.
