Guest Longboarder
Has anyone ever used any of the SAMS "Teach Yourself" books for learning Linux? I have just put MDK 9.0 on my PC but I am a complete novice with Linux and wanted a book that would guide me through with some exercises etc. Any suggestions? Cheers Longboarder
Guest FenestraeNunquam
When I bought mandrake 8.1 over a year ago, the first book I bought was Sam's Teach Yourself Mandrake Linux in 24 Hours. Its not bad I guess, if you don't know anything about linux (which I didn't). I read thru the whole thing and learned a little about linux & mandrake in general. btw - I hate admitting to the above, since I started the whole thread about For Dummies / Complete Idiots / Now What? books. Guest BlackSnow
Stay right away from Sams - waste of trees/paper Learn CGI in 24 hours is a fine example
DragonMage
Sam's books are usually a waste of paper they are printed on. Stick with O'Reilly if you really need printed books. Otherwise, either google it, search the howto or just ask on this board or usenet.
bvc
Once you get a few basics, open a terminal and type rpm -qla | grep man You'll get a list of the best manual ever! Guest beeboy
Ya, I agree Sam's sucks. Most stuff in print is already obsolete. Save your money and print off the web.
Guest JaseP
Beeboy is right. I have yet to see a Linux book in print that is up to date. Maybe they are out there, but they just aren't in wide circulation. If you find a Linux book that is 1-2 yrs. old it's way obsolete and won't help much except with basics. Besides, why pay for what you don't have to...
Counterspy
The idea of downloading and printing the How-To's and some Man Pages is an idea that I have followed. I know have eight 2.5 inch binders full of material better than any book for the main reason that it's up-to-date. When you exhaust the material already put in the documentation section of the main menu that Mandrake has provided for you, add http://www.tldp.org to the other sites you have in previous posts.
