When I get there after install, all I get was the UNIX prompt. I was able to log in and do all the UNIX command. How do I get to the pretty GUI? I dont what I install. GNOME? KDE? How do I get there from the UNIX prompt? I hope I install it right. Thanks for all your help.

Urza9814
if you get an error when you try startx, you might wanna google it...lotta people seem to have trouble with that on 10.1...it shoudl start the GUI automatically. if startx doesn't work, you might wanna check out this: http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/topic-28142-0-asc-12.html or http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/topic-28782.html

Guest chong67
I am still in training mode .. sorry, but appricate all your help. I type startx and I get all sorts of error on the screen, most noticeable: Fatal Server error: no screens found XIO: fatal IO error 104 Connection Reset by peer) on X Server ":0.0" I think I need to get to some Window first to configure all these things. What else can I try? I can only download the 3 CD and thats all I install. Should I reinstall again? And pay attention to what to install? I think I install everything. Thanks for ya help! Ixthusdan
Please tell us which vidoe card you are using. If you type MCC at the command prompt, you will get a guiish type Mandrake Control Center. Check the video configuration there.

Ixthusdan
As root "XFree86 -configure" which will replace your present file. Sounds like a problem when it originally configured, so create a new file.
Guest chong67
It say I have to do it in the root. Is it the root that is at the highest part without any "\" or the \root folder. Anyway, I cant get into the \root folder. It says Permission denied.
bvc
root=administrator type; root (hit Enter) type roots password (hit Enter) XFree86 -configure (oh...and hit Enter) Edited March 3, 2005 by bvc
kristi
Just type kde and hit enter. Kristi
aRTee
bvc: root as a command?? Nah, don't think so. bvc meant: type su followed by your root password, then you can execute other things as root/admin. kristi, don't think startkde is going to work, since even starting X doesn't work....
