How Do I install USB Peripherals?

Hi

I have just succesfully installed Mandrake 10.1 Community Edition on the following Laptop: Compaq Armada E 500, 384 mb RAM, 18 GB HD,CD/DVD ROM, with one 1.1 USB port.

Till now things work fine: But I cannot figure out how to access an external USB peripheral like an External CD RW, or a FLASH/THUMB drive. For the latter I got a link http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtop...hl=thumb+drives but this will work for the thumb drive not for the cd rw - so whats the way out.

Also I am using the Community Edition, whatever that means _ I just hope it does not mean a lock in

regards

bamboo

When you plug the CD drive in to the USB, look at either the output of

dmesg

in a console or

tail -f /var/log/messages

To see what device name it is giving it. Then look in fstab and see if it created an entry for you there. Once we see the relevent output of one of those commands we can help you better.
