bvc
true, true I didn't mention that ppl were always installing usr's drivers and having problems getting them to work because that's the past. Now, since the 2.6 kernel, it seems ppl have trouble even getting the 5686 to work. The easiest, most basic modem setup known to man. I didn't know if drivers from usr were necessary or not. It's the reason I bought the 5686 actually because as Gowator says the driver is built in to the kernel so all you do (or did) is point the dialer to either /dev/ttyS0 (COM1) or /dev/ttyS1 (COM2). oh, setserial should not be necessary usb is another story and will need drivers (as far as I know) Edited January 13, 2005 by bvc

bvc
I used my external USR 5686 with ML-9.1 and it was installed. It's the linux kernel therefore all distros have it....that's what is great about external serial modems.
Yugi
So I can just take my modem and plug it into the USB in the computer, like normal, but have 10.1 and it will work?
bvc
no, it's not serial. I've google and looked at usr's website and see no linux solution for that modem. All I can ask is is there a /mnt/cdrom/USR5633a/Linux or /mnt/cdrom/Linux ? If not, I don't know what else to tell ya.
