a13x
I have another Linux box for experimenting/playing etc with MDK 10.1 installed. The problem is that X won't start. a13x
Why would I want to do an init 3 since it doesn't boot into the graphical interface ? devries
Maybe the ssh is the problem? Perhaps you're somehow attempting to start a remote X session and you want a local one.
aru
...also The video card model is SiS 6326. There is no Device section in your config file. How should your card be identified? I'm not sure and maybe things have changed now with Xorg, but a Device section was mandatory in the config file. execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 13) what about 'ls -l /etc/X11/X', it is correctly pointing to '/usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg'? a13x
I knew something was missing, but I don't know what to write in the device section If it were an nvidia card it would have been easier. Should I run xorgconfig or whatever it's called ? I'm not home right now, but when I get there I'll try it. a13x
We are getting closer. I've just checked if the X@ link is correct and I found out that it wasn't pointing in the reight place. [root@localhost alex]# <{POST_SNAPBACK}> # Because you are still at init 5 even without graphbical interface so long as your inittab is set to init 5. init 3 knocks you down reliably, stopping the dm which was probably running but not working! startx : then gives errrors to stdout not /var/log or wherever the broken link was pointing... and ... get to see a bit more :D OK, I'd recommend you just use vesa for now. Sis is tricky because its closed source and the openbsource driver is basically guess work..... so where you would normally put nv or nvidia put vesa :D once you can get into X... we can work on the SIS driver .... you can also just run (as root)) XFree86 --configure (and follow instructions) and this should give a basic functioning XF86Config .... once you have one and proper internet access/ cut and paste etc,. its easier to help ya :D
aru
I need that device section, it seems. But what do I write in it ? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> man xorg.conf <--- tells you what you need to put in your xorg.conf file man sis <--- shows you what options admit your graphic card I can't post you an example of a Sis card because I don't own any, but here is my "Device" section --using nvidia--: ~$ sed -n '/Section "Device"/,/EndSection/p' /etc/X11/xorg.conf Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "NVidia" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce4 (generic)" Driver "nvidia" # closed source #Driver "nv" # open source Option "DPMS" EndSection ~$ HTH Edited December 16, 2004 by aru
Gowator
man sis <--- shows you what options admit your graphic card Which reminds me lsmod has a switch that gives the options too :D If you just change nvidia for vesa... then you STILL need to add a line for the layout saying monitor1 and device1. I'd honestly autogenerate a file then edit that.... the X.org is still symlinked to XFree86 I think so don't worry about that fact the command i used was Xfree86 :D

pmpatrick
That file looks like a mess to me. Try this. Go back to your original xorg.conf file; it's a lot closer to what an actual working one should look like on mandrake but it's missing the Device section. Then run as root: # XFdrake That's mandrake's graphical X config utility. When launced from a terminal, you get the ncurses version of it which you can navigate using the keyboard(no mouse support). Select the "Graphics Card" entry. Sis 6326 is listed in the data base; select that one and then test the configuration by selecting the "Test" button. I assume you don't want X to start at boot, If that's the case, go to the "Options" button and select "No" when asked if you want X to start at boot. You can't have 1280x1024 with a vesa driver I don't thgink it must be 800x600... the problem seems to be that you are trying to start a new X on the client machine. IceWM: Can't open display: localhost:11.0. X must be running and $DISPLAY set. but ahem... its running.. and you haven't given permission I have a feeling its actually working.... try going to run level 3 on the machine your ssh'ing from then try a startx .. just to see it works... and CTRL+ALT+BKSPC to kill it... then to the ssh...from the cli Once you connect you need to export DISPLAY=<ipyoucamefrom>:0.0 then try startx :D
