83mercedes
This is gonna sound dumb, but I finally got cable internet, and it is so cool... but how can I have the little icon in the system tray that I used to get with dial-up? (The little "two monitors" icon that shows a connection?) Thanks in advance.
3lade
I was after the same thing. I do miss not having that, it was always a good indication of what was going on. I found a solution, install gkrellm and set up a monitor on your internet connection. It's not the little flashing screens but does the same job and is quickly growing on me as a better replacement. 83mercedes
Thanks, I will try that.
Cannonfodder
When you have cable internet, you are always on. You really don't need an indicator unless you just enjoy the visual indicator. The most important thing now is to make sure you have turned on your firewall software. If you are running windows also, you need to download and install firewall software (use the free version of zonealarm).
83mercedes
Thanks, I knew about 'always on' but I'm not sure which firewall to use,I guess for my purposes the less configuring I have to do the better off I'll be. Have you got a favorite? Thanks.
Cannonfodder
For windows, either zonealarm or tiny personal firewall. They both require only your "ok" as you attempt something on the internet. TPF may no longer be free (last time I checked). For linux, go to your Mandrake Control Center and double-check that your firewall is running.
MoonChild
Guarddog is certainly the easier one to use and configure! Give it a shot!
83mercedes
I just use Mandrake, so I went and installed the firewall from the control center, I guess that's OK. It was fairly simple, even for me. Thanks for your replies. :?
chalex20
When you have cable internet, you are always on. You really don't need an indicator unless you just enjoy the visual indicator. And what if I want to know what is the current download speed? Or whether there is any traffic at all? Network connections are often subject to failures/disconnections/etc. The most important thing now is to make sure you have turned on your firewall software. If you are running windows also, you need to download and install firewall software (use the free version of zonealarm). Agree completely. To answer the original question : if you use KDE, try knetload. Very convenient systray app, IMHO.
