Starting FireFox 10

Hello all. I also have a question redarding Firefox. I'm very new to linux, a fresh convert.

I downloaded Firefox and Thunderbird in RPM file format and installed them both.

When trying to start firefox it won't from either the terminal or icon and with Thunderbird it starts but won't let me create a profile, something about can't write to drive. :wall:

But.... if I open up the terminal and login in as "SU" they both start fine via the terminal, no issues at all.

Would this be a permission issue? Any ideas??

Hey ho YaAqoB

I presume then as you've downloaded the rpm's, you've extracted and installed the packages as outlined in message 7 of this thread? If not, how have you downloaded/extracted/installed.

Right click on your shell scripts (firefox/thunderbird programmes) and check out permissions - look at advanced.

As for Thunderbird, come back with the exact script you're getting. And detail the procedures you take to get there. Have you managed to create an email account at all yet?

I had a problem earlier whereby I extracted and ran firefox from /home/username

I then used this pathway to create a menu link. Later, I was tidying up /home/username and moved firefox into another directory, which of course changed the pathway and so wouldn't start up until I amended and created the new pathway - have you done anything like this? Though I doubt this would cause an issue running from the terminal.

I'm only a noob myself, but have installed both FF and TB.

Maybe some of the more experienced will recognise some of your issues, either way, hold on to yer hat, I'm sure we'll get you there.

I am having the same problem.

from a terminal running /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.0/mozilla-firefox-bin works fine and firefox starts up and will import your settings from mozilla 1-7 etc etc.

But if you create an icon to launch the same path it will just show up as "starting firefox" and do nothing, and eventually it will just close off.

I still have mozilla 1.7 installed and I have checked the permissions on the folder structure and i get this:

by what I can see the permissions are fine, maybe there are certain things that need to be done in order for firefox to be launched by KDE. I did see a permission reset script once in regards to this but I cant seem to find it atm.

Guest dre2004

I tried something else which might help. I decided to run the application in a window and not to close the terminal once it finished and I got this error in the terminal.

/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.0/mozilla-firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libmozjs.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

You see, this is where I start to get lost and confused. (i'm a noob, only been doing linux a few months).

When I download firefox or thunderbird - I do a 'save as' and save the package to a directory (folder) either on the desktop or /home/chris

When the download is complete, I then go to that directory and extract - that creates a new directory. I go in there and run the shell script (in the case of firefox, that's what its called, in the case of thunderbird, its called thunderbird - I don't touch the firefox-bin etc) - that opens up FF.

From here-on, I can create a short-cut/link to the shell script. If I move the directory, I just need to remember to adjust my link pathways.

In an earlier message within this thread, I did a step by step process from downloading, extracting, installing and creating a link. This works for me everytime :D

I've looked at /usr/lib/ and see no mention of mozilla or firefox

I got this problem sorted. I found the solution in an earlier topic.

You can change the permissions so that you have full read/write access to all the files in your home directory. If I was called joe and my home directory was /home/joe I would open a terminal, change to the root account and type:

chown joe -R /home/joe

chmod -R u+rwx /home/joe

chgrp -R joe /home/joe

This worked a treat for me and I have no problems starting either Thunderbird or Firefox now.
