Can't access the Internet from my Samba server

Internet access was working fine when I first installed Mandrake 10. I installed Samba and setup urpmi with the Main, Updates, Contrib and PLF servers. Downloading the updates worked fine.

After configuring Samba and getting it set as my PDC for a Windows domain, I can no longer access the internet with any web browsers. I have turned the firewall off to no avail. The IP address is static and it has all of the same DNS information as each of my workstations. I have tried restarting the server (that's a Windows trick) but that didn't work either. Logging in as root had no effect either.

One thing I can do is open Konqueror and connect to windows shares (smb://computername/sharename )

When I go into the Mandrake control center and select Network & Internet > Internet access, I get: "Connection type: lan Status: not connected"

I can login and authenticate to the server from all of my workstations, browse the server in My Network Places and ping the server from all workstations. I am at a loss right now. :wall:

Any suggestions or further questions are more than welcome as I cannot currently get software updates.

Thanks,

# ppp temp entry

Does that help?

according to this you have a router/DSL modem with an IP of 192.168.1.99 ..

this presumably means you have overridden the4 default since I dont know any that do?

presumably http://192.168.1.99 this should take you to the config screen ?

so try root@sixty4:/mnt# traceroute www.mandrakeusers.org

mine from France goes like this

traceroute to mandrakeusers.org (213.232.92.170), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets

1 (192.168.2.1) 0.400 ms 0.385 ms 0.491 ms

2 bsvzy151-net1Lo3.francetelecom.net (193.253.171.9) 57.404 ms 57.345 ms 54.236 ms

3 10.224.32.5 (10.224.32.5) 55.613 ms 55.139 ms 57.112 ms

4 pos12-0.nraub103.Aubervilliers.francetelecom.net (193.252.159.29) 56.158 ms 55.468 ms 54.010 ms

5 pos13-3.ntaub201.Aubervilliers.francetelecom.net (193.252.103.18) 110.762 ms 256.173 ms 78.357 ms

6 193.251.126.154 (193.251.126.154) 77.503 ms 61.436 ms 64.529 ms

7 P1-0.PASCR1.Pastourelle.opentransit.net (193.251.243.30) 65.919 ms 62.306 ms 63.158 ms

8 Level3.GW.opentransit.net (193.251.240.214) 74.133 ms 63.753 ms 65.221 ms

9 ae-0-17.mp1.Paris1.Level3.net (212.73.240.97) 67.985 ms 64.564 ms 65.206 ms

10 unknown.Level3.net (212.187.128.42) 65.937 ms 66.864 ms 64.800 ms

11 as0-0.bbr1.London1.Level3.net (4.68.128.109) 84.165 ms 66.744 ms 64.518 ms

12 217.163.4.34 (217.163.4.34) 59.696 ms 62.108 ms 60.403 ms

13 mandrakeusers.org (213.232.92.170) 63.866 ms 63.667 ms 67.995 ms

if this works for you (different route then its your browser misconfigured)

if not try

traceroute 213.232.92.170

if this works and the klast one didnt then its the resolv.conf needs updating.

traceroute www.mandrakeusers.org gave me: unknown host mandrakeusers.org

traceroute 213.232.92.170 gave me the proper results

So it seems that I cannot get out past my firewall (which is a watchguard firebox X by the way). The DNS names are not resolving properly. The only problem is that the DNS servers are correct. All of my windows machines have the same DNS settings and are having no problems connecting at all. tracerouting to the DNS server by IP address from the MDK machine gets hung up on the last hop everytime :furious3: . Why can't this computer see the DNS servers and every other computer on the network can? :help:

So I have been researching and investigating my problem further. I tried

iptables -nvL

and I was told that the command could not be found. I opened MCC and went to install and searched for iptables and shorewall and sure enough, they somehow disappeared. I reinstalled them from the CD and now when I try to modify the firewall settings in MCC they will not change from allow everything.

How difficult would it be to back up my Samba config and users and reinstall MDK? I am at a total loss here and need to get this fixed. All of my windows xp workstations can see and authenticate to the Samba server. None of them can ping the server but the server can ping all of them.

****UPDATE****

I can now access websites using the IP address. This is quite bothersome as it is nearly impossible to remember all of the IPs of the websites I visit. So it has become glaringly obvious that the problem is DNS translation. I have checked over and over and resolve.conf contains all of the correct information.

Any new ideas?

I am still suffering from this problem. Does anyone know anything about this? DNS resolution is not working but my resolve.conf looks fine to me. Also, I read that maybe named wasn't running. I check my services and named isn't even in there. Do I need named and where can i get it if I do?

Thanks,
