US Robotics 5633 usb modem problem

I installed Mandrake 10 a week ago and haven't been able to get the modem working. Harddrake shows it as a scanner and an unrecognized hardware. I can't even figure out how to uninstall it (must be newbie :)).

From other posts it appears I might have a winmodem. Is this the case?

Any help will be appreciated

Not only that it is a winmodem (conexant hcf chipset), but it seems that you have to buy the driver from http://www.linuxant.com . I think there is a demo version of the driver that is limited to 14.4k speed to test if the driver works with your usb modem or not.

Anyway, here is the link for the spec for that particular modem.

And the link for the driver

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hcf/full/downloads.php

Good luck.

Thanks you for the help. I doubt if I would have found linuxant on my own. I ran the listmodem program but it didn't pick up any Conexant chipsets. So I tried installing the hcf and the hsf programs for my version of the kernel. They didn't install properly.

It might be just a comedy of errors from a newbie. If you can identify a mistake please let me know.

First I tried installing the driver using Konqueror by just clicking on it. During the install it said there were bad signatures. I finished the install anyway but the driver didn't make any difference. Then I used the shell to remove the driver using "rpm -e" command and reinstalled it using the "rpm -i" command. The shell had quite a bit of info listed about signature NOKEY and no pre-built modules (try to guess how much sense that makes to me at this point). The last item reported was that the scriptlet failed.

I only need the modem for updating linux software. The US Robotics doesn't look like it will work with linux. I don't know how important updating the distribution software is, but for now I don't plan to buy another modem.

Thanks for your help. If I happen to get it running I'll report back so others can benefit from the info.

It seems that you need hcfusbmodem, driver, not hcfpcimodem driver. Unfortunately I cannot find the free version of the driver unless you are using PowerPC. So I guess you have to buy the driver. But I think it's better to buy an external serial modem instead than spending 15 bux for the driver.

Sorry I cannot be of any more help.
