Neverwinter Nights: Linux Client Update - Saturday Dec 21 02:07:21 2002 - [posted by Marv]

The weekly drama(sorry) of the Neverwinter Nights: Linux Client has been posted. Things are looking up for a release eariler next year.

Dec 20 2002] This will be the last OS update for the year 2002 as we are off on our Christmas break. Our next OS update is scheduled for Friday, January 10th, 2003.

Despite all of the excitement around sound and The Two Towers, work on the Linux client this week consisted mainly of finishing up some display issues. Resolution switching, full-screen modes, and other mode switching was pretty flaky, but is working fine now. Sound-wise (Samwise?) we are gutting and replacing code like mad and look forward to the the final integration in the new year. There will still be about a week or two of work to make the final changeover.

Seeing The Two Towers will probably come first, though.

The new update is pretty uninfrmative,...

It basically says that the next update will give more inforamation about how the NWN client will work with updates and expansion packs, etc.

OK, here's the skinny on NWN Linux client,...

Good news:

* A Beta will be released [relatively soon], before the finished version (the beta is apparently pretty stable

* The executable will be able to run all the expansion packs (no change in the executable)

* The Linux executable apparently does not require the stupid "Play Disk" to be in the drive

Bad news;

* There will be no "installer" for the game, so you'll have to install using a Windoze boot, and move the game files over (or else install using Wine [not transgaming's winex] and move the files to the install directory

* Alternatively, a download will be available of the game files (1+ GB, so better have cable... )

* No movies

* No native builder utilities (some have gotten them to run with a special build of wine)

Also, you will need to buy a Windoze version of the game for the CD Key printed on the inside manual cover,... no freebies here.

All in all, it's decent news. Most people maintain some Windoze boot capability making the transfer of files pretty easy. It's a mild bummer about the movies, but I suppose if you must play them, you can get a Bink player running in wine and play them manually. The lack of an installer or builder utilities is a bigger bummer, and casts a shadow of a doubt about Bioware's commitment to future Linux ports (tougher than they originally thought to port them???). Let's stay on them about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for a Linux port of THAT title... gently encouraging them to release a port of that game...

Well, tomorrow there may be more news on the status of the Linux client beta.

For now, they are in a process of bug hunting and tweaking. I'm very much looking forward to this title and already have an place-holder icon on my desktop for it.

Well,

Aparently it's still a bug-hunt. Apparently the bugs are so big that they are not willing to introduce the beta to the wild yet.

The update on the NWN Linux page just says

"[Feb 7 2003] Bugs. Dammit."

And that's all. No further detail. In the forums, users are just asking for the beta to be released, since many of us don't mind bug-hunting.

The latest from the NWN Linux site:

[Feb 14 2003] Not much news to report this week, but we've got screenshots! The Linux client has been brought up to date with the 1.28 updates. Apparently, there are also some really nasty penguins camped out with the recently added Gnolls...

There are screenshots showing Penguin placeholder monsters,... hilarious...
