Hello everyone,

I am a really new mandrake user (newbie is an understatement)

and my linux system just don't want to be alive.

I am stuck in a vicious circle where I want to use linux so I could learn to use it

but my system is so unfunctional that I am always tempted to click twice the "down arrow" button when the bootup screen is showing (that is , booting into windows)

perhaps someone here can free me from a life of agony... :help:

here is a description of my problems:

Graphic adapter:

-------------------

I have an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro, Manufactured by ATi

[i've found about 100 ways to install the adapter, none of them worked]

Audio Device = SoundMAX :

-------------------------------

the device comes onBoard with Asus P4P800 MB

[i've tried Installing ALSA, did'nt work] :furious3:

Rockwell Dial-up Modem 56 Kbps:

--------------------------------------

Can't even Identify it.

If someone wants to earn points for making another happy mandrake user

(who really wants to become one, but just can't) Just replay with some answers please.

:thanks:

Can you tell us what version of Mandrake?

My last version with Mandrake didn't work with my asus onboard sound, but Mandy 10 plays nicely with it.

As for the modem, as it a winmodem? If so you'll need some drivers for Linux to talk to the modem. Check out www.linmodems.org to see if a driver for that modem is listed.

As for the graphics card, ATI's are a pain to get working. Try running XFdrake as root, try selecting the stock drivers and see if they work. If not, you can try the ati linux driver from their site. You can download it from windows and access it from within Mandrake.

Mandrake 9.0 was a typical rough release. If you wish to use a past release, use a .2 release, 9.2, or 8.2. The bugs are gone in these.

I would suggest using Mandrake 10. Your onboard sound is not compatible with Mandrake 9.0, but should be fine with Mandrake 10.0.

For the modem, most pci modems will be winmodems. If your modem was cheap or from oem, then it will probably be a winmodem. Either way, search on that site I listed for a driver.

Preferably, you should have an externel modem as that doesn't require software to run. It will be recognized right away and very easy to configure.
