Hp Launches Linux Laptop

HP is doing a test case by launching a Linux laptop. However some things are still lacking... I hate how there are always "buts" and "howevers" when it comes to Linux pre-installed computers. But at least they are testing the waters.

Read it here:

That sums it up...

Compaq have nice servers but the real advantage is the maintainance contract.

Without it they are a liability since spare parts are very expensive when available.

Almost every PC Ive felt like throwing from a window has been a HP or Compaq...and at the same time they both make some excellent top end machines.

Compaq especially had stupid propreitry parts like the metal plate on the graphics card would be made a weird shapre to stop you upgrading it with a different card...not bought from them.

In many cases the same card but with a different shaped plate would be 2x-3x the price for an identical card! Technically though compaq was strong... they actually poineered a lot of innovations many before their time ...

Compaq write their own bios and at least understand it...

HP are just spoilers--- take the printers. The are built to fail.

5L/6L series will fail on the paper feed. They have replaced one notched wheel with a very soft plastic one...which is designed to fail after what they think is a fair time.

The professional series have a smarter hidden code. Only HP franchised engineers get this code but you can set a HP printer to disable itself after x copies and flash...'call service engineer' all the service engineer needs to do it pull it apart for show then switch it back on while hitting the right key combination and he will be asked how long he want to set the next service for. You cant get just anyone to do this... they need the HP books with the codes!

The reason the personal ones are wrecked is simple. Otherwise they would provide hundreds of thousands of copies for the budget price with the same quality as the professional ones!

When HPO play with bios they dont understand and usually wreck it.

One thing to beware of is home PC's supplied to a company.

HP and Compaq both have special crap for this, even worse than the usual range.

They will take international models (ranges are country specific) and then find the one closest to what your company spec is...

they will then regionalise it for your company...if they are buying enough units

this means sticking the bios in your language...unfortunately they will propbably break it at the same time and remove options like switching off inbuilt graphics etc. ... becuase its easier than translating the whole lot.... they make an absolute minimum...

HP/Compaq furums are FULL of these !
