EMERGENCY - dissapeared disc!

I just booted into my PC (running arch although I doubt that's relevant) and for some reason found that mozilla kept crashin whenever I went to any site.

After that, X crashed and I had to restart my computer - the kernel was still running I think, as there was none of the flashing lights that accompany a kernel panic. But nothing was responding so I had to switch the machine off. now it's as if I had no hard drive at all!

The drive was partitioned, some of them were reiserfs, but my boot one was ext2.

Can anyone help? I've lost everything!

no, although the current system does have two drives. I could try swapping the master and slave over and installing linux on that and see if it's mountable.

My only question is - if it could be seen by another system, why can't mine. It really is as if it was not even physically connected to the system

Is there some kind of disk check/repair utility that I coulduse to get it back up long enough to back up the data? Ideally one on a bootable media...
