Rugged PDA

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering, since I'm currently training in an oil refinery, if there was such a rugged handheld running linux, for the purpose of recording ultrasonic testing measurements.

I've been to www.ruggedhandhelds.com and all their stuff runs windows CE which is not as customizable as linux (and MS is evil  ). Not to mention Linux is technically superior to Windows. Wireless is not required, actually it's prohibited since one might be unlucky enough to wander into an explosive atmosphere in the plant (classified as Zone 1). :o

And hey, rugged handhelds would be cool to take to mountain climbing trips. B)

Anyone? there might just be a good amount of money available for this. :)

Not aware of anything that is rugged - the sharp zaurus is the main linux contender and I don't think it's that rugged. Some pocket pcs can have linux installed on them - notably ipaqs.

BTW - I have to say that, despite personally preferring palm, pocket pc is actually a very good product IMHO

There is a company that makes very rugged pda cases. The one I almost bought had a thick rubber coating and metal corners - hardcore. They make them for all handhelds as well.

Now the problem; I can't remember their name or the url for their store.

Google?

Try www.otterbox.com in the US or www.otterbox.co.uk in the UK for rugged cases rather than PDAs. Hope this helps.
