pcbuilder
I am running Mandrake 10 & Xp Pro from a boot loader My original setup was the XP Pro using forceware drivers for an MSI motherboard and a MSI Graphics card with Nvidia chip sets. What i would like to know is do i need to install Linux versions of these drivers on my Mandrake partition to take full advantage of the hardware, and will it in any way conflict with my XP setup
tyme
if you plan on playing any 3d games you'll want to install the drivers for your nvidia card, follow the directions here to do that. You don't have to worry about your linux install conflicting with your windows install. does your sound work?

pcbuilder
I have downloaded the drivers via the link and followed the instructions.I installed the kernel then tryed to carry on but the downloaded file could not be found.Checking the file name i noticed it was different than the instructions 4496-pkg2 was in fact 5336-pkg1.But typing this in came up with the same result where am i going wrong
tyme
make sure you are in the directory you download it to, and make sure to do chmod +x with 5336-pk1 instead of 4496-pkg2. you have to do the chmod before you can execute it.

pcbuilder
Thanks for that i am getting somewhere but not very far. When i enter the chmod command it seems nothing happens the cursor just drops down aline is this correct? When i then enter the ./NVIDIA-Linux etc it starts to install in that it asks to accept l Entering yes then tells me something about a problem with the kernel

pcbuilder
Her Goes No precompiled kernel interface found matching your kernel Attempt to download from Nvidia FTP YES No matching kernel found at Nvidia FTP
tyme
say no to attempt to download from NVIDIA ftp, and then say yes to building a module. make sure you: urpmi kernel-source as suggested in the FAQ before you go this route. The problem is simply that nvidia has not created an RPM for Mandrake 10.0, and so you must build your own module. This isn't an error, really, it just means a little bit more clicking and patience ;)
pcbuilder
Still no joy No precompiled kernel interface found to match your kernel need to compile new interface. O>K> Unable to determine kernel file name I am beginning to feel MS will always rule the world if something that is simple in Windows is a pain in the A**E and loss of sleep in Linux Any further help would be great thanks i have not quite given up yet  Edited June 30, 2004 by pcbuilder
