Guest anon
To get to the desktop, login with your user name, then type startx Then go to mdk control centre, boot, you will see a gui with the options to start kde, gnome etc, auto. just choose and put a tick in the box

Guest anon
This error is linked to your other problem with installing nvidia drivers, is it not ? In a console or term type XFdrake to rewrite your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file
aze
yeah! the console said something about this file. It happened after trying to install nv driver I'll try this right now...

Guest Languid_Heap
Hi aze, Why don't you post your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file here so we can all take a look at it? Perhaps with enough eyes on it, someone here can spot your problem. -- LH
bvc
with upgrading, you shouldn't need to do anything with the config file, unless nvidia changes things. Others have had trouble with the new driver and have to create symlinks and stuff. You're not going to notice any diff from one version to the next, so I'd just go back to what you had that worked...unless it didn't  Or start googling, reading, and picking things apart. aze
What I did: I reinstalled the mdk9 and bellow you can see the difference between XF86Config-4 and XF86Config-4.bkp the one working fine Section "Module" Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension Load "v4l" # Video for Linux Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so" EndSection the one has problematic Section "Module" Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension Load "v4l" # Video for Linux Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "glx" # 3D layer EndSection I still not understand. Could this problem be occurring because the order of RPM installation? I follow this order: 1 - NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.src.rpm 2 - NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-3123.src.rpm
Guest anon
Post the whole XF86Config-4 file, not just that part. Installing kernel first, then glx is correct, i assume you installed the src.rpm and then rebuilt them and installed the rpm ?? You did not need to re-install mdk 9.00 for this problem

So I'm unhappy. I prefer to know were is stored the system config (like XF86Config-4). Were is the gamma cfg stored (xgamma)? Actually I don't know what nv dirver is really installed on my system :(
Guest anon
Do you know how to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file ? If you do, and you have installed the correct rpms , http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-...0-4191.i386.rpm http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-...dk90up.i586.rpm edit that file so : Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "nVidia Corporation" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic)" Driver "nv" Option "DPMS" EndSection ............. Looks like this : Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "nVidia Corporation" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic)" Driver "nvidia" Option "DPMS" EndSection
