Hello, what is best way to install software drivers for modem, network card etc.

 

Is there a central menu to install drivers from in Linux?

 

Mandrake 10.0

Also, is there a central web site to get Linux drivers from?

 

need network card, modem, lexmark z45 & z 23, mustek scanner, logitech webcam drivers.

 

Accton NIC and HSP56 modem

have you looked to see if these are already detected by Mandrake?

 

Look in Mandrake Control Center -> Hardware -> Hardware Detection to see if they are already there. Mandrake Control Center may be listed as "Configure your computer" in your menu.

Most, if not all, of these 'drivers' you need will actually be modules available to your kernel.

 

Check in MCC -> Hardware -> Harddrake (Menu -> System -> Configure your computer) because some of them might be already set up. Also, with the exception of a few things, all of the tools you will need to get your computer up and running will be on Your Mandrake cd's and can be accessed either through urpmi via the command line, or the Install Software option in Menu -> System -> Configuration -> Packaging -> Install Software.

Thanks for the help, I am new to Linux and have to get used to the file formats for associations.

 

i.e. Driver files are inf. in windows, not sure what they are in mandrake.

 

i.e. also doc files for word, xls for excel, etc.

 

Is there a central web site to list file extensions for applications?
