  1. OK, thanks for the help. I started reading some fo the FAQS on driver installs before. I think to get up and running for now on theinternet in Linux Iwill upgrade my direcway 4000 to the 6000 cost is minimal for upgrade. The 6000 modem will run on Linux, Windws, Mac, etc. For right now I need internet on Linux, as I keep having to log off and back into windows to get on the net. Then I can learn from Linux when I can surf the web, without having to log off to windows again. I have a HSP56, they said it is a nightmare to install it anyhow, so I will just upgrade the sat modem instead for now. Thanks
  2. I just found out that direcway/hughes new DW6000 will support Linux, no software just the 6000,hookthrough router and ethernet port. At least thats what they tell me. I have the 4000 now, which is USB.
  3. I have a D-Link 4 port router I just installed a week ago. How can I hook up to the internet with the router? I have a network card, an hsp56 modem, and driecway 4000 S&R modems,no Linux drivers for the direcway sat modems. It is also a combo hub/switch which I will use for Linux LAN, and I have already set up for Windows LAN.
  4. OK, I will try this one more time, this is the third post. HSP56 modem, I downloaded Linux drivers, how do I install these drivers versus windows installs??? When the FAQ are posted, they assume you know about Linux already, ie compiling, etc. How do you compile?? what terminal or screen do you use?? the run command?? When do you need to compile??? HOW do you install a new Linux modem driver, the one I have is not working. HOW do you update the kernal if it needs it?? I need to get on the internet usinf snail modem because direcway has no Linux drivers yet. I need straight plain simple answers to some basic questions. Is their another web site for Linux dummies? I already know about creating icons, and using the standard programs, ie office org etc. adding desktop devices etc. I need some help on the compiling, they say compile, with what??
  5. What is the typical procedure to install drivers for any hardware? Have a HSP56 modem I need to install Linux drivers for. I know the winmodems have problems with Linux. Is their a fairly cheap alternative to the winmodem that Linux likes?
  6. I fixed the games graphics, adjusted resolution. Only game I don't have sound on now is Chromium,is their a hidden setting on Chromum? Both volumes are up, system sounds work etc. All other games the sound works good.
  7. I tried that previously. However, I tried this again, and this time instead of enabling large disk support, I selected NO instead of yes. Tha seemed to do the trick on the reinstall with the old partition deleted. I was then able to go in and MDK 10 auto allocated the tables, just make sure you deselect windows for MDK 10 format option as you want windows intact. Not exactly sure why that would make a difference as the first install it auto allocated the free windows space for MDK 10, and used large disk support enabled. Strange. Tux racer is still sluggish playing as is Chromium, could this be a graphics problem? What would cause soem games to be sluggish and not responding and others to play normal? can the games be reinstalled or os their a fix for the games? thanks in advance.
  8. I have already installed MDK 10 previous. Had afew corrupted files from previous incomplete bootups so I wanted to reinstall MDK 10. Windows on first partition, MDK 10 on second. I keep getting errors on auto allocate for MDK 10 for the second partition. I tried manual allocate for mdk etc. I tried everything including, fdisk and wipe out second partition, defragment pc, add secondpartition through windows fdisk, etc Keeps telling me drive is too fragmented for MDK 10 to read on fresh install. Makes no sense I don't want to wipe out windows to reinstall mdk 10, 40 gig drive previous split for win/mdk is 20 gig and 20 gig. Any workaround for this? I defragmented entire drive. I think MDk needs to work on this from happeneing inthe future. I shoul dbe able to do a simple clean reinstall without getting defragmented drive and file errors> Thanks in advance. I have mdk 10 on secodn pc also that one work fine.

Is the SQL-Ledger system have all you need to run it? Or do you have to buy DB2/oracle, etc ? Thanks in advance.

Also any free databases? looked at SQL Ledger accounting, I am not a major programmer, just want a good free simple prgram to use. Is GNUcash good enough for that? Thanks in advance
  11. Since I can not convert access 2000 mdb files and the mdb tools is only read access, does anyone know a good simple program to use for customer billing in Linux? A user friendly mandrake 10.0 database than can be setup for sales orders, customer ecords, reports on sales etc. Love md 10.0! thanks in advance
  12. Thanks for the help, so I understand then Jet 3 and jet 4 are read only. SO if you had to make design change syou woul dhave to make them inwindows, then copy mdb file over? Also, end user would not be able to enter data such as sales orders into the read only file at all right (on linux)? Also, is their an alternative database in Linux to use starting from scratch to make a new database? (user friendly) thank you
  13. Thanks for the help, I am new to Linux and have to get used to the file formats for associations. i.e. Driver files are inf. in windows, not sure what they are in mandrake. i.e. also doc files for word, xls for excel, etc. Is there a central web site to list file extensions for applications? thanks
  14. Hello, what is best way to install software drivers for modem, network card etc. Is there a central menu to install drivers from in Linux? Mandrake 10.0 Thanks in advance Also, is there a central web site to get Linux drivers from? need network card, modem, lexmark z45 & z 23, mustek scanner, logitech webcam drivers. Accton NIC and HSP56 modem thanks [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  15. Mandrake 10.0 installed, love it so far, makes windows like like crap. One question though, is there a way to convert a Microsoft Access 2000 database (Office 2000) to function in Linux using one of the Linux softwares? Thanks in advance.
  16. It appears the problems I had installing 10.0 was due to the bad burn on first set of cd's. Obtained second set and installed on 2 pc's and no problems. A tatung monitor will not work with 10.0 it gives lines on the menus and no text. It picked up the intel 810 graphics and the rage IIc adapter, and proview monitor and KDS monitor no problem. Should I be able to use USB satellite direcway on 10.0? I have the 4000 I do not see why not.
  17. That is what i thought too. Trying a different set of disks. The problem on the first Pc I think is the damn integrated graphics controller, Intel 82810E, I just get the command line, no boot into Linux GUI. The second Pc is the same problem mentioned in previous post. Where can I get the fix for the intel 82810E graphics? thanks
  18. Thats nice, but I am new to Linux, HOW do you fix the font server problem?? on one pc, everyhting appears to work properly, except the menus are just lines in them, no text. I can bring up open office ok, and menus work in that fine, and I can read text etc. So apparently, it must be with the OS portion of the menu system? HOW do I fix it?
  19. Which free version of Linux is best and where can it be downloaded from? I heard slackware is good. Also want a version that is automatic to install, and something that works properly. I installed Mandrake version 10,and was told the font server could possibly be messed up. On two newer pc's and neither mandrake 10 works properly. There must be an easier version to work with. I installed Mandrake version 8 before and had no troubles on another pc? what happened on version 10?? 10 should be better and imrpoved, not worse than 8. [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  20. How do I get the update? Thanks
  21. When I go into Configure my desktop>Look and Feel>fonts, I have just lines instead of menu text. The word processor views fine, but no menus have text, is this some type of bug?? I installed mandrake version 8 before with no problems on a different pc. thanks
  22. I have Mandrake 10 installed and can view desktop fine, welcome screen shows text fine, but no menus have text, just lines in them. ATI 3D Rage IIC which was selected on install. Tatung monitor was selected on install. Also will not load desktop on another pc with integrated intel graphics 82810E. Someone has to know the answer to this problem?? Thanks
