Guest greg32
Hi, I am so dissapointed with the mandrake package. It has all the looks, and frills, but the system itself has failed me in one of the most critical ways. No internet! So annoying. Windows has no probs fully setup first time I boot in, with no further configuration, Red Hat the same, didn't have to touch a single setting to get it to work, but with Mandrake I have tried every possible combination known to me, and set everything as it should be, re-installed three times, with less and less packages installed to see if anything was interferring with the net connection, but no go. It looks like I will be getting rid of it for good, and reverting back to Red Hat, where I can at least use the system. If you don't know what problems I have had, just do a search for my posts for user greg32 for an idea. I am about to go to work, but I think tomorrow, if nothing has come up and I still can't get it to work, that will be it. Unbelievable! thanks to those who have tried to help, but I can't take this anymore. regards Greg
Guest anon
Well a search on your posts only brings up 2 , and this is one of them. Im not much good on networking, but anyway, Have you been to the hardware data base to see if your modem is supported ? http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3 Have you looked in mdk control centre, hardware, to see if your modem is listed, does it list the right one ? if not, run the config tool provided. Have you tried auto detection without filling in the gateway, dns fields etc ? auto at boot ? Have you done a search on this board ? does this post help (among others ) http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?p=9862#9862
bvc
Don't know if you've seen this, or if it'll help? http://mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=2459 Re: ML 9.0 Problem with realtek 8139 on Shuttle SS51g (Score: 0)by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 02 @ 01:58:23 PDT Great !! I had exactly the same problem as described in Cooker list on my brand new, shiny and tiny Shuttle SS51G (SIS651 FlexATX motherboard). The onboard Realtek 8139 ethernet card was recognized, the appropriate modules were loaded but the network could not be activated. This was my last showstopper. The "noapic" trick fixes the problem. Now I can move my main environment to 9.0. Thx - Happy User
roland
do you see this: Error scenario: You have an ethernet card for the local LAN and a modem for internet access and you can't reach the internet. Why: Drakconnect wrongly asks for a gateway, and ppp can't set your modem connection as the default route. Solution: As root, edit /etc/sysconfig/network and manually remove the GATEWAY entry. there: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/errata.php3 ? roland
Guest metz2000
I'm having the same problems... it's so annoying. I cannot connect to the internet which makes Linux a no go for me. I have a "speedtouch usb" ADSL modem and I have been all over the place trying to get it to work. I don't know if I can take it any more. Why can't I find a Linux distro which has a button which says 'connect'? When I click this button it does a little magic and connects me... I want my modem to work straight out, a little less messing about. I have tried so far: Mandrake 8.2 Mandrake 9.0 Lycoris (newest version) Debian (Woody)... couldn't get into the GUI/desktop in this distro. Linux seemed like a dream to me... I could finally break free from M$... not so it seems. Without the internet Linux is useless to me. So unless I can get some help from someone I am going to have to go back to Windows, oh well :(
ezroller
Not to be rude, because I know how it is when money is tight...but why not go and spend 15 bucks on a NIC card that is on the hardware compatability list........
Guest metz2000
How is a NIC going to connect me to the internet? Through an ADSL router? Well that's another £60. Please explain if there is an easy way to get the speedtouch usb modem with Linux. If the answer is "no", then I'm afraid I will have to say goodbye to Linux for a few years until things start working a bit better. I might try apple in the meantime.
