is there a way to add a logout button and a lock screen button to the taskbar if so, how? and is there also a way to make a shortcut key that will lock the screen, i remember in XP i made a shortcut to lock the screen by pressing a "F" function key can this be done?

To add these buttons, right click on your kicker and go to panel menu -> add -> applet -> lock/logout applet.

To configure keyboard shortcuts (in KDE), go to K menu -> System -> Configuration -> KDE -> Accessibility -> Keyboard Shortcuts

What about creating a icon on the desktop to shut down the computer? My father cant seem to figure out how to shut down Linux  and every time I boot up I get that unclean shut down message thing. Is there anyway an icon can be made to shut down the computer?

Thanks
