VeeDubb
You may have heard this before, and you'll probably hear it again, but believe me when i tell you this from my own personal experience. GET A REAL MODEM! Regaurdless of the fact that they are easier to configure and 100% of them work with linux, you will also notice right away, better faster, more stable connections and you will upload and download at a greater percentage of your connection speed with fewer dropped connextions and erronious packets. We're only talking $50 and it is worth every penny. the modem iused for a good long time before getting broadband is the Creative Labs 56k ModemBlaster External. It conencts to a serial port, and is a dream to configure. There's als USB, pci, pcmcia and ISA modems that are hardware controlled, if you don't have a serial port. If you need one of those, I'm sure someone else here could reccomend one to you.
xbong_x
thanx! could you give some good modems internal or external advisable for such newbies.
roland
Well my own personnal experience is different from VeeDubb's Before I went ADSL I used a Conexan winmodem without problem. Just you have to know that the drivers are kernel dependent. So I guess hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt04051300full_k2.6.3_9mdk-1mdk.i586.rpm is for the 2.6.3-9 kernel. Check your kernel: uname -a as root. xbong_x
thanx roland! execute uname -r i got this: 2.6.3-7mdk. do i have to recompile my kernel to 2.6.3-9 or find a suitable hsf driver? any guides on how to do that? Edited June 3, 2004 by xbong_x
roland
no: find the 2.6.3-9 kernel and install it. Don't forget to install the 2.6.3-9 kernel sources also, I think it's needed. edit: ... or see if conexant also have a driver for the 2.6.3-7. xbong_x
linuxant has no hsf driver for 2.6.3-7mdk, so i'd better look for the new kernel.. thanx anyway!
roland
ok, I saw your other post, I didn't found the 2.6.3-9 kernel too. Probably a CE update that had been updated again: CE runs 2.6.3-13 now :( Arrrrrr those things that are supposed to be simple and turn time wasting you can have a look there or there look at those sites, try again or reconsider VeeDubb opinion -_-
xbong_x
i reinstall mandrake 10 (5th time), install hsf modem driver from linuxant, then run hsfconfig, sadly i got this: [root@localhost sbin]# hsfconfig Conexant HSF softmodem driver, version 6.03.00lnxt04051300full If you need license keys, assistance or more information, please go to: http://www.linuxant.com/ When reporting a problem for the first time, please send us the file generated by "hsfconfig --dumpdiag". No pre-built modules for: Mandrake-10.0 linux-2.6.3-7mdk i686 Trying to automatically build the driver modules... (this requires a C compiler and proper kernel sources to be installed) Please ensure that the kernel-headers or kernel-source package is installed. Where is the linux source build directory that matches your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux] any idea?? need some help..
streeter
I'll go with VeeDubb - get a real modem.. Getting a winmodem (there are many, many different types) going usually requires a bit of Linux experience which, with respect, you obviously don't have - yet : ) . Not to say you shouldn't try, just that you will probably need lots of patience and have to do loads of reading, and it still may not work at the end of it. See many other threads on this forum... LTD602
I've been researching this problem for over a week now, making phone calls, posting in forums, and yes . . . . . you need to use a REAL modem with Linux. Ther is a slim (to none) possibility that you *might* get a winmodem to work, but even then, you're still going to have issues. You need a modem that is not software driven, but that has full hardware . . . . an external serial modem. I've also heard that PCMCIA hardware modems will work, but in any case, virtually any brand of external serial modem is almost guaranteed to work with Linux. The setup ios simple too, especially in Mandrake 10: simply select the port location of the modem, have it queried, and input all your ISP info - password, phone#, etc. Believ me, I've already tried at least 7 winmodems with Linux Mandrake 10, and it's been nothing but headaches . . .ESPECIALLY for a noob. DragonMage
Winmodems are big headaches, hardware modem is better. However, smartlink (the main winmodem manufacturer for laptops) has pretty good support in Linux, as long as you know how to compile their driver. I am using both PCMCIA hardware modem (3com ethernet/modem combo card) and smartlink winmodem in linux in this laptop. 3com is less hassle but slower (it is made in what.. 1998?) while the smartlink is more hassle but faster. I use the 3com for emergency / just after installation purposes while the smartlink is for my regular internet use.
