Darkelve
Does anybody know of a LiveCD which would work (relatively) fast on 233Mhz laptop with 64MB ram? Mepis complained about Ram, but actually let me run IceWM on it, but starting up applications (everything else but console) is dog slow. It would be nice to find such a thing. Darkelve
Thanks anna, I actually have Slax and tried it. But when I try to start X, it says could not find screen on [0] or something like that. So I could not get a GUI with it.
Darkelve
Oh my god!!! Knoppix gets KDE 3.1.4 running on this old machine!!! Bow! Bow! I am not worthy! :D
chris:b
Darkelve, that was a bug in a previous release. Get the new one. And then after logging in as root, the command to start the light version is: guifast If you never saw SLAX, you'll be surprised. It's the best, really. Forget about all the 700 MB LiveCD's, they are sloooowwww. (and the graphics and menus, geez, bah) On my system the SLAX with kde starts faster than my installed system! Windependent
As far as Live CDs go, I've tried three" Knoppix -- worked great! SuSe 9.0 -- worked great! Suse 9.1 -- locks up during boot on all machines tested. personally, i'm a big fan of Suse, but I really liked the Knoppix Live CD better. hth! bob
