multiple programs - Yahoo IM and Gimp

I recently got mandrake 10 running and am having a few problems with some programs.

I am still pretty much a newbie at this so bear with me.

1) Yahoo IM: I download the latest redhat 9 RPM and install it. When I run it, it only works

if run from konsole, and as root. then before I can set all the settings it crashes and I

get a 'segmantation fault' error. this app worked on 9.2 for me. Any ideas?

2) The Gimp 2.0: I have a bunch of RPM's from different places and installed them. If I

try to launch it from the menu or a desktop icon it won't startup. If I launch it from konsole

it starts right up. Why does this happen and what can I do to my menu link to fix it? If I

create a icon on my desktop how do I set that up properly? I tried this previously and

I kept getting a gimpwidgets error, which is installled already.

I think thats it for now, I just got UT2004 back up and running as I type this.

Thanks, Jason

At least one answer for you:

1) get gaim. urpmi gaim as root in a console. It will do everything for you, including Yahoo.

2) I haven't installed gimp-2.0, but I assume that your menu icons aren't pointing to the right location. What is the command you type to start it? I assume that you have to go into menudrake (be careful) and change the shortcut for The Gimp to whatever you use to launch 2.0

2) I had the same problem with Mozilla - it wouldn't launch from menu. Had to start t from cli as root.

I've since re-installed (yes, I broke mdk 10CE :cheesy: ) and everything llaunches OK.

AHHH Never do this.......

Running the web browser as root is oone of the few vulnerabilities linux has.

If it wouldnt start it was probably a mistake in the RPM for the permissions or ownership of a directory and could have been fixed...

Thanks for the help guys. As for IM clients, I also have kopete up and running,

but I like to have yahoo as well, since sometimes the others won't work with

yahoo. As for the gimp, I go into konsole and type 'gimp' and it fires right up.

If I make a new shortcut on the desktop, can I include any options here for it

to start up as root or start thru konsole? Thanks again!
