Apache mime types

Here's a newbie question, sorry; I don't know a lot about apache yet.

How do I enable a mime type in apache so that it will enable that type of file to be downloaded? I am working on a side project, but in order for it to work, I need to be able to click on a link, and download the file specified in the link. I have a php script that generates all the header information for the file, but when I click on that link, all it does is display the header and content information on the page rather than prompt me to download it. Any help that anyone here could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

These are aall good suggestions, but maybe I should explain what it is I'm trying to do. I am trying to make the 2 scripts I found here: http://www.a500hacking.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=510 work. It will allow me to download stuff to my phone. I don't know if I can edit the mime types of the firmware browser on the phone, nor do I know how to hold down a shift key. the application/octet-stream idea is a good one, but where do I put that?
