VeeDubb
Anybody have a clue? If I can't figure this out, i'm going to have to RMA and pay a 15% restock fee, not to mention the lost shipping. chalex20
May it be that the sound is just muted? ALSA tends to such a stupidity.
ShadowFoxLSU
First try to run XMMS from the console. If you get an error, post it here, I will try to help. If not, go to Kmixer, or gnome's sound widget, and make sure that the sound is not muted. (I had a similar problem, and it was because the sound was off by default)
VeeDubb
I ran xmms through the console and it loaded without errors. Once it loaded, I opened an mp3 and hit play. The clock started running as though it were playing, and the litle bars that move with the sound bounced up and down as though it were playing. Still no sound. I verified that sound was not muted through xmms. still no sound. Then I checked that the sound was up in kmix, aumix and alsamixer in the console, and after each, I rebooted, and still no sound. Of course, i made sure it was enabled in the bios, and that my speakers were properly connected, and tested the speakers with another computer, to make sure they were functional, all good, still no sound. Also, i tried updating the bios to a newer version, and still no sound. Lastly, here is the output from lspci if it helps at all: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 746 Host (rev 10) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SG86C202 00:02.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]: Unknown device 0964 (rev 36) 00:02.5 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] (rev 01) 00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0) 00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.1 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.2 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.3 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller 00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 10/100 Ethernet (rev 90) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 MX 440] (rev a3) i would REALY appreciate any further help. If i can't get this fixed, i'm going to have to return it RMA and pay 15% restocking fee.
ShadowFoxLSU
You should have turned it up and not rebooted. The reboot was not needed. Anyway, the fact that there are no errors makes me think one of two things. Either the board has a bad jack, or the sound settings are wrong. Check the PCM channel and make sure it is turned all the way up Edited April 3, 2004 by ShadowFoxLSU
VeeDubb
One more thing, I know it can produce sound, because when the mic is not muted, I get constant feedback. It's not normal feedback however, as it continues even when there is no mic plugged in. When the mic volume is low, it is a high pitched wine. As I turn up the mic volume, the pitch drops and it becomes a percusive sound.
VeeDubb
I think PCM is the problem. In kmix, there is no slider for pcm, just a checkbox. In alsamixer and alsamixergui, pcm is there, but I can't move the slider at all, and it apears to be at zero. In aumix, it apears to be at 100, and i can move it around, but as soon as I take my mouse away, it snaps back to 100. Any more ideas? VeeDubb
Also, I have googled this for hours upon hours. I have seen many people who said they had similar problems, and a many who said they fixed it, but not one stinking person who said HOW they fixed it. VeeDubb
Like the jitter-bug, so simple it plumb evaded me.... If anyone else has this problem, you need to do two things to fix it. 1. Open up mcc/hardware/hardware and click on the sound card. Then click "Configure Module" and in the box for "Enable" put a 1 2. Open up your favorite mixer and disable "IEC958 Capture Monitor" That's it, you should have sound.
caiocafe
I have a similar problem!!! I have an Asus Motherboard P4S533-MX with ADI AD1980 6-channel CODEC and I´m using Mandrake Community 10 and I have no sound. I tried alsa snd-intel8x0 and snd-via82xx. I readed somewhere: "I've got an Asus A7V600, VIA KT600 chipset which has an ADI, AD1980 onboard sound chip. It uses alsa, AC97 compliant on Mdk 10.0, kernel 2.6.4, without the need for aumix, alsaconf. Works surprisingly well! ;) snd-via82xx : VIA Technologies|VT8233 [AC97 Audio Controller] [MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO] Run 'draksound' as root in a term, follow all the steps under trouble shooting if needed. Your driver with that i865 chipset board could likely be different. Actually i8xxx chipset is more a cause for possible concern. Particularly since that board is a i8xx chipset, VIA controllers mix. I suspect the ADI chip needs the VIA driver, so try both the Intel and VIA drivers. You probly don't need to get one, they're already available on your **system" but I have no sound yet.
