Printerdrake (MDK 10 CE) failed to install my HP LaserJet 5P when I ran it from the Control Center in Gnome so I ran it from the console and got this:

I'm glad I read this thread. I'm fed up with my inkjet printer acting up and because I do alot reading on the web and ebooks I decided to go and buy a laser printer and wanted to make sure I get something that will work with Linux. A local store has an "offlease" HP LJ 5P for $149 CDN and I need something that I can do a printout and read it on the subway on my way to and from work.

BTW I'm running Mandrake 9.1 and loving it. :D

Laser Printers, especially HP Laserprinters (not newer cheap model though unfortunately) are very easy to support in linux. The only thing about HP LJ 5P that I don't like is the frequency of paperjams, but it is probably that particular printer's problem.

Try using the cleaning utility from HP and see if it will clean any goo off your rollers. It prints a black sheet of paper and then you turn it over and run it though again and the black gets heated up and junk on the rollers stick to it.

The only thing bad about CUPS is it sends data into the printer when MDK boots up and it when I print something for the first time, it prints a leading blank sheet with a little string of garbage on it unless I hit the yellow reset on the printer first.

Actually just found an HP 5L for $110 and a 6L for $124. I also checked out prices for toners and the remanufactured ones are $64 (Staples own brand). As for the paper jams on the 5L it is a common problem with them, I have a buddy that repairs printers and copiers and told me why that happens. Anyway I'll either go with the 5P or 6P. I was also considering a Samsung 1710. Anyone out there have a Samsung printer working with Mandrake?I love to hear back if you do. If not then maybe I'll try one out just to see how it works and if Mandrake don't like it then I can just sell it off and get an HP. hmmm what to do? :wall:

Cheers,

Desire
