MillerTime
okay I re-burned disks 1-3 on 1X and tried to install again. Disk one was smooth like normal, disk two was going smooth then started throwing error codes again. I have to abopt install, install disk one again, and then cancel the install. So the problem, it appears, is that I'm not being able to install the needed pieces. I downloaded my MDK ISO's from the mandrake website so I'm kind of perplexed as to where I need to go and get the proper files. I am willing to deal with this the "long" way...at this point I just want it to work and I can download the missing programs later.
liquidzoo
My guess after this much trouble is that your download of cd 2 is bad. I would download it again from another ftp server than you downloaded it the first time and try 1 more time. The only way I know of to get all of the needed programs after install would install everything on those 3 cd's...probably not what you want. MillerTime
Do you know the web address of a reliable site where I can download CD2 and CD International...I've downloaded CD2 from two different sites off the mandrake website and both have been bad so I'm not very trusting of their sites anymore. liquidzoo
I usually use ftp.nluug.nl for my mandrake iso's, it has always been a reliable and relatively fast mirror for me.

bvc
you need the kernel-source installed. It's not on the cd's so you'll have to download it. Google/Linux go hand in hand ;) . I did an exact search for unable to find the system utility 'ld google-search http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ar...003/12/4/127791 Edited February 13, 2004 by bvc

bvc
Not at all. We should have told you that early on. But it is in the README from NVIDIA in the Installation Section. ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x...1.0-5336/README KERNEL INTERFACES The NVIDIA kernel module has a kernel interface layer which must be compiled specifically for the configuration and version of the kernel you are running. NVIDIA distributes the source code to this kernel interface layer, as well as a precompiled version for many of the kernels distributed by some popular distributions. When the installer is run, it will determine if it has a precompiled kernel interface for the kernel you are running. If it does not have one, it will check if there is one on the NVIDIA ftp site (assuming you have an internet connection), and download it. If a precompiled kernel interface is found that matches your kernel, then that will be linked[1] against the binary portion of the NVIDIA kernel module. The result of this operation will be a kernel module appropriate for your kernel. If no matching precompiled kernel interface is found, then the installer will compile the kernel interface for you. However, first it will check that you have the correct kernel headers intalled on your system. If the installer must compile the kernel interface, then you must install the kernel-sources package for your kernel. [1] NOTE: installation requires that you have a linker installed. The linker, usually '/usr/bin/ld', is part of the binutils package; please be sure you have this package installed prior to installing the NVIDIA driver.
