Guest white_hat
I've been looking for a good video player on which I can view most standard formats and codecs that will run under Linux. (You know, something that will play movie trailers encoded for all those people on Windows boxes, like QuickTime or Windows Media Player.) Has anyone had a really good experience with one software package or another? Thanks in advance. --Daniel Harper
Guest Kamikaze_Gerbil
I love mplayer. Plays DVDs, VCDs,mpg, avi, mov, and rm. Can be hard to get working, but definately worth it. RPMs are available here: ftp://plf.chem.yorku.ca/pub/plf/9.0/i586/
SoulSe
Xine is my favourite and is pretty much the standard. It is on your mandrake cds, just make sure your display card is up and running properly....
Guest white_hat
Thanks for the advice. I'm downloading mplayer now; we'll see if that one works for me. I've got Xine installed, but can't get the audio portions of video files to play for some bizarre reasons... --Daniel Harper
Cannonfodder
Haven't checked out mplayer lately on DVD playback, but if it doesn't do it for you, check out ogle. It has excellent playback for DVD.
MoonChild
MPlayer is the one! Make sure you install all plugins before compiling (ie libdvd etc). The RPMs don't work well for me, so I never use them.
DOlson
The RPMs from http://mdkextras.by-a.com/ work just fine for me. That may be because I made them though... ;)
Vdubjunkie
i have yet to get mplayer gui working , but it is great from cmd line, and Xine is also very difficult to get working, so as long as you are doing it the hard way, do the media player preferred by most for it's sheer ass kicking ability.. mplayer Like cannonfodder said, Ogle is great for dvd, and not that darned hard to get going either.. imagine that. roc19
Sinek, Totem, and aviplay are pretty good players. They use the same libs as Xine so anything xine can play these players can play. I like them cause they have much simpler interfaces than xine or mplayer.
