Problem with Integrated Sound Card/modem

Hi I just installed Mandrake Linux 9.0 on a Dell Laptop (Inspiron 3800).

Windows reports the modem as ActionTek 56k however when in Linux i implement cat proc/pci I get:

Multimedia controller: ESS Technology ES1983S Maestro-3i PCI Audio Accelerator (rev 16).

Then

Communication controller: ESS Technology ES1983S Maestro-3i PCI Modem Accelerator (rev 16).

First thing I noticed is when I tried to connect it would just stop at "Initializng modem". The modem query would pass though.

To insure it may indeed be the modem I installed a PCMCIA Zoom modem and that dials up with no problem.

Then I noticed that I can't adjust the volume via the hardware. volume controls are done via the key board (Function-volume up or down icon). I ensured it was not the keyboard function key by triggering other functions.

Now I think this part is key:

When Linux is booting I get the following Failure:

Mod probe: insnod snd-maestro3 failed

Any advice on how to go from here to fix the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and have a good day.

I went into the kernel xconfig program and see that there's a OSS driver and a Alsa driver.

Mod probe: insnod snd-maestro3 failed
This is the alsa, and the Help button says, no help available. The Help button for the OSS driver says, if you have this sound card say yes. In the selection part for the OSS driver it says (EXPERIMENTAL). Great help huh?

Have you tried to run sndconfig? (If the card is compat with the program)it'll load the modules and write to your /etc/modules.conf file. Open a terminal and

su

<enter root password>

sndconfig

If it's not installed do

urpmi sndconfig

I don't know what to say about the modem.
