Good Lord

It would be easier if you describe your network.

Is the PC plugged into anything else or just the modem/touter for internet.

You can do a few things, the main question is are any of them worth the time.

Its possible gfor the NIC to report if its plugged in or not and if not not try and get a dhcp address,

You could assign it static if your modem will allow etc. etc.

If you use it for nothing but internet then you can set it only to come up as part of the internet connection scripts.... but then iot will take longer to connect.

Heh.

I have a wireless network I use (wlan0) but I'm working out the kinks in getting that working. All I have to do is type in "ipcfg wlan0 up" and it works, anyone know what I should do to fix it? Maybe something in a startup script?

Anyway, I'm also connected via CAT5 to my brother's computer, which runs Windows XP /w connection sharing. It's also connected with wireless, which is where my connection ultimately comes from, but the wireless works fine on Windows...

When his computer is down, quite simply, no internet for me. And that means long boot-up times as well.
