Guest iCone
Hi, Total and absolute UNIX newb here, just inherited a Mandriva 2008.1 box and would like to review its general configuration. The problem is that after logging in as root don't know how to start the GUI or the commands needed to review the hardware, disks and network configuration. Tried commands like startx, harddrake and harddrake2 but none are found, is the box missing pieces of software or is just me that don't know what I'm doing? Please help me find my way around. Thanks
Guest iCone
If I do Ctrl+Alt+F8 I get a blinking cursor on the upper left but nothing else.
isadora
Suggestion: try starting your machine with a Live-CD, like: http://www.mageia.org/en/downloads/

isadora
What shall I pick from all the options? Try KDE-32 bits for example.
Guest iCone
Tried to boot with the KDE Live CD and after filling up the 9 circles on the Mageia screen it remained there and nothing happened.
Ixthusdan
If you have a console after boot, then startx should launch a gui. If it does not, then it is possible that the x server was not installed, and probably no desktop environment. So, as root, do "urpmi kde" and you should get a request to install additional packages, including the x server. After the install, then do startx. Note that this will install over 100 packages, so relax and wait for it to finish. Edited May 5, 2012 by Ixthusdan
