Kieth
Just a silly question. The other day a friend stated that with the proper software, it would be possible to read dvds with my regular cdrom player, since the method of reading the disk is the same (laser). Is this possible? If so, I could save me the money and not buy a dvd reader. Thanks, Kieth
Qchem
I think someone might have been pulling your leg....... AFAIK the lasers are completely different
Gowator
1) As Qchem says lasers are completely different. 2) They might have meant a DVD by converting oit to videoCD 3) Save money ?? A DVD reader is only the price of a couple of premium DVD's Not much point IMHO ... it has the added bonus you can then rip the DVD's to VCD and play them. Guest JaseP
They are indeed different. A DVD is made by multi-layering the data. The end result is many times the storage capacity. A normal CD drive can't read all the layers. The lasers are a specific frequncy to allow fine-tuning of the read. If you stick a DVD into a CD reader, it won't even detect that there is a valid disk in there. You can't even write to a re-writable DVD with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive.
