daniewicz
Try installing the gftp version from the Mandriva 2008.1 repositories. If you want to (easily) install the latest and greatest gftp, then you need a more recent version of Mandriva.
K Bergen
How did you come to the conclusion that gtk provides glib? I would think the package libglib would be what provides glib. If you haven't already done so set up your online repositories http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Basic_tasks/Installing_and_removing_software#Making_more_applications_available Then enable contrib-backports to install the latest gftp, all the dependencies will be installed automagically.
