rogerh 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2010 Hello, I am running Mandriva 2008.1. I have successfully been using Digicam with my old camera (and any that I tried of my friend's cameras). Digicam version says 0.9.3 with Gphoto lib version 2.4.0. In any case, I hooked up a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3, turned on the Lumix, and the desktop just sat for a while (usually the Digicam fired right up with the old camera, a Kodak CX6200). Finally it recognized the camera as a DMZ-FZ20, and tried to download pictures. It just churned awhile, and came up with 'failed to connect to camera...make sure it is connected properly and turned on... abort or retry'. I retried with the same result. I also tried to 'edit' the camera, and the whole digicam app crashed. The USB connector is different for the Lumix, so I guess it is possible that is bad (but it looks pretty new). Any suggestions?? Hopefully this is a common, simple problem, with a simple solution. Thanks -- Roger
scarecrow 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2010 Most likely you need a newer version of libgphoto2, which will allow digikam to access the camera as PTP device- but since 2008.1 is older than the Great Pyramid, this may not be feasible. But you can always access the camera as a mass storage device.
rogerh 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2010 How can I access as a mass storage device?? I can see that it exists on Konqueror, but it does not allow me to access/open it. Is it safe to say that Mandriva 2010.1 is the current release of choice?? Thanks -- Roger
scarecrow 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2010 (edited) You are not allowed to access the camera /usb storage device due (most probably) to permissions. First get sure you have the package "dosfstools" installed (necessary in old system to access FAT32 partitions) and that the user is alloed to mount removable devices. Can you open the camera as root? ( "kdesu konqueror" and then open the camera from the root konqueror instance ) And yes, AFAIK 2010.1 is still the latest, but upgrading from one version of Mandriva to a newer is not a trivial task. In general, backing upo your user's data and perforimng a fresh installation is the preferred method for Mandriva, as well as any Linux distro which is not following a "rolling" release cycle..
