Trouble getting LCD TV to display correctly

I am trying to display my laptop's LCD onto an LCD TV, but no matter what I do the TV cuts off some of the screen. I actually have two laptops, an HP NC6400 and an HP NW8240. The first has an embedded Intel video chip (945?), and the second has an ATI Radeon FireGL X1300. The TV is a Sharp LC-26AD22U. The TV's manual says that it is compatible with a PC using 1360x768 resolution.

I am able to see the laptop's screen on the TV, but the TV always cuts some of it off. Another odd thing: I normally use higher resolutions on the laptop screens, but when I tried to reset them to 1360x768 (which was offered as a setting in MCC) the screens did not actually seem to change resolution on the laptops' screens. Going into MCC afterwards shows the 1360x768 res, but still the screens look like the normal higher resolutions. I have attempted to reset he screen ratios on the TV, but no luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

You do not say which desktop you are using.

If using Gnome then install the package grandr_applet

If using LXDE use lxrandr

If using KDE use krandrtray from Menu>Tools>SystemTools

randr allows you to define the resolution of the laptop and the TV separately. Your video chip needs to be randr compatible. The ATI should be OK. I am not sure about the Intel.

Also I think you will need to have the TV plugged in when you boot your computer for it to work.

I am able to see the laptop's screen on the TV, but the TV always cuts some of it off.

I had that problem with a TV earlier this year. The computer was a desktop with an nVidia video card, the card's DVI output was connected to the TV's HDMI input through an adapter and cable.

I suspect the problem was caused by the TV sending incorrect EDID data, or not sending any EDID data. Examine your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file for any mention of an error encountered when trying to read EDID data. I solved the problem by editing xorg.conf so that the EDID data is ignored. Below is the relevant section of my xorg.conf file.

Section "Device"
   Identifier "device1"
   VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX to GeForce 4"
   Driver "nvidia"
   Option "DPMS"
   Option "ModeValidation" "NoWidthAlignmentCheck, NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck"
   Option "DynamicTwinView" "false"
   Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals"
   Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI"
   Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "FALSE"
   Option "UseEDIDDpi" "FALSE"
   Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"

Another odd thing: I normally use higher resolutions on the laptop screens, but when I tried to reset them to 1360x768 (which was offered as a setting in MCC) the screens did not actually seem to change resolution on the laptops' screens.

I suggest leaving the laptop display at it's native pixel count, or whatever resolution you prefer to use on it. You can set the TV's resolution independently using xrandr commands in your .bash_profile file. For example, I have an external display connected to a laptop, I use the following xrandr lines to activate the external monitor.

xrandr --output VGA-0 --off
xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1400x1050 --rotate normal --pos 1400x0 --output VGA-0 --mode 1400x1050 --rotate normal --left-of LVDS --pos 0x0

For some reason, I must turn off VGA-0 before I can use it, that's why I use that first xrandr command.

Thanks Delboy and Boatman.

I am going with the HP NW8240 laptop with the ATI Radeon X700 video card, and I'm using Gnome. I've set the laptop resolution to 1280x720, which is also acceptable according to the TV manual. The screen is somewhat better, still cut off, but not by as much. I am trying to use it to show educational videos, so the cut edges are not such a problem now as the videos show inside a window. (I would like to see it perfect though.) I am not knowledgeable enough to understand what my Xorg.0.log says, but I am including it below.

Right now, I can see most of the screen and it's usable, but I've run across another problem. I prefer to use VLC media player because many of the videos have multiple audio tracks. Some have subtitles, and I often have to switch to different tracks depending on the viewers. VLC gives a lot of control over this -- but though the VLC window comes up the actual video does not show. There is a blue rectangle where the video would be. Movie Player and Banshee show the video without problems, but I can't seem to control the audio and subtitle tracks in them.

Here is my (large) Xorg.0.log:

Please run xrandr from command line and post the output.

Read the man page for the driver (radeon), which you can find on your computer or here. There are some commands there you may find helpful, for example "IgnoreEDID". The commands are specific to the driver, so the commands for the radeon driver may be different than in my nvidia driver example.

For example, to disable use of EDID data when using the radeon driver, you would find Section "Device" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add a line as below.

Option "IgnoreEDID" "TRUE"

After that you may be able to set display resolutions by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, either direct editing or using MLCC.

Sunwatcher,

Do you have a non-Linux operating system installed as well as Mandriva? If so, does the overscan problem happen with the other operating system? Certainly you should disable overscan if possible. My TV has no setting to disable overscan so I found my solution elsewhere. I didn't know such setting existed on any TV.
