Ixthusdan
Does anyone use theGimp? I am trying to edit some large psd files (Adobe Photoshop). These files are on a dvd and are in layers for editing and rearranging. But when I try to open them, they reach the point of display and the Gimp has an internal error, and closes. How do I troubleshoot this?? Oh, my machine works on them just fine in windex xppro and photoshop 7.
tyme
start gimp from a terminal and see if it outputs anymore specific errors (other than internal error) to the terminal? or have you already tried that?
Ixthusdan
No, I haven't done that yet, but I should have! I'll reboot to 9.2 and check it out. Thanks!
tyme
darn right you should have! :-P if nothing else it should atleast give you a better idea of what's going wrong.
Ixthusdan
Looks like it might be too new of a version of photoshop! It had a lot of unrecognized layer styles. But it will launch from the console, and not from the menu! Go figure. It is real slow. Maybe I need more ram? But xp is a ram monster and it works there just fine. tyme
if you're using the old 1.2 version of GIMP i can see how you might be having the "too new of a version" issue. i would suggest installing gimp-1.3 devel version, it should be in contrib i think
bvc
increase the gimp's cache? just a guess. How about saving as somehting else to hd where you won't loose too much quality and then open in the gimp? Do what you need to do and put them back to psd and increase the quality. tyme
i would guess he wants to keep it psd so that he doesn't have to "flatten" the image, i.e. it'll keep all the layers intact so that he can fool w/them.
Ixthusdan
Yes, in CorelDraw, I can ungroup the layers and manipulate them further. My sign program is a great program, but all the elements of a graphic need to be ready for production prior to importing it. I don't use windex at home very much, so whatever I do here needs to be able to go back into the windex programs I have at work. I am going to look at the cache. Are there any rpm's for the devel version, or do I compile with the tarball?
tyme
i think there are rpm's in one of mandrakes repo's, contrib or maybe cooker. i'm not sure, but i'm pretty sure i had it installed in 9.2 at one point.
bvc
you got cooker?....you got rpm's ;) ...wait...actually, it may have been plf's cooker/contrib.....I'll look when I get home if you haven't found it yet. If you don't find rpm's....post back. Edited January 2, 2004 by bvc
