I did the following:

 

For winmodems.. you need to know what chipset it is first. Some winmodems are supported. To check whether your winmodem chipset is supported, go to http://www.linmodems.org

 

Type lspcidrake and see what modem chipset you have.

i got the response:

LT:www.linmodems.org: Xircom|Mini-PCI V.90 56k Modem [COMMUNICATION_SERIAL]

from mandrake, is this fixable?, any help would be apreciated.
